I got the info at support.ideainformatica.com/hplj1020/ and downloaded the file from "here" as they suggested. I succeeded in unpacking it (I believe), and it sort of appears that some of the instructions are either superfluous or they don't work. Here is the whole slew of stuff. The compiler name should be gcc. Edit the Makefile and make sure it's gcc. HTH. Regards. -- Alfredo Cole-Tuckler

It seems you do not have compilers installed. Go to Yast -> Software -> Install and remove software -> Selections and select "C/C++ Compilers and tools" Dmitry [snip]

Doug, Not to be the wise guy, but didn't you say you has just purchased this printer? Why are you putting so much time into an incompatible printer, when you could more easily return it to get one that will work with Linux. There are other inexpensive laser printers out there far more compatible! Just a thought. Lee

Well, I've had the thing for at least a month now. And I bought it over the internet. If I had to do it over again, I certainly would not buy that, but I think I'm stuck with it. I have almost determined not to deal with HP anymore, even tho their "big" laserjet works really nicely, and their color printer has its nozzles in the ink buckets, rather than in the printer, so if they get clogged, you just buy another ink reservoir. Cheaper than throwing the printer out, even if not by a whole lot. Who would have imagined that HP would make a printer without PostScript? When I complained about the 1020, they basically just brushed me off. I think their attitude stinks. I tried to get YAST to find and load the C and C++ compilers, but had no luck. This computer also has a Linux installation, but I can't get the KMail to work on it, even tho I _do_ have the network connection working, now. I can ping the outside world, and Google, but not read or write mail. The other computer, which only has Linux, can't print. What a mess! --dm -- No virus found in this outgoing message. that this printer supports only Windows, but the printer certainly does
work on Linux as shown on Linux Printing.org. Among all the printing

Epson do a decent job with Cannon at the bottom of the heap and Lexmark a
bit better.
Essentially, before buying a printer for Linux, always consult the
appropriate resources.
