CNET is trying to be on both sides of the fence in the OS wars. IMHO Linux WILL replace WinXX on the desktop, for one simple reason: M$ greed. People haven't collided with the instability of W2K yet and even worse, if you've read the MS Reg wizard posts I've put on this list, they will shortly butt heads with M$ over authorization codes to reinstall their office products on their PC after W2K has crashed and blown the installation to M$ Hell. And that isn't even mentioning the problems they will have when they make a simple hardware change and M$ apps refuse to run because the REGWIZ 'thinks' a second 'pirate' copy is being attempted. When the M$ clerk refused to reauthorize they'll start looking around. Then they will find out that stability is more than just PR talk. When the paradigm cascade happens it will be quick. It will seem like it happened overnite. Look, your all missing one fundamental point. Users know windows and they know MS-Office, that keeps MS on top. I've worked as a support engineer for about 20 years and in the last 8 or 9 years all I hear day after day is users telling me how great MS-Office is.... the fact is that none of them have ever tried anything else. Yes it crashes and yes Wordperfect andf others are far superior to anythink mickeysoft could ever concieve, but users don't know anything else these days and companies take the easy option and put up with the mickeycrap. As much as I love unix, by the time linux could penetrate the mass desktop market, none of us will be using PC's well be using smart appliances. Yes windows will die, but not because anyone showed it up for how bad it is, but rather because we are no longer using PC's. Sad but true IMHO :) On Fri, 17 Mar 2000 07:00:06 -0600, Jerry L Kreps wrote:

Appliances won't cut it. We already have them and they didn't fit the need. I could easily pull out my Scientific calculator to do numerical analysis and calculations. Or, I could pull out a TI92 to plot functions. Modeling would be a little tougher but then there is always the T-square and triangles. For animation a flip-pack or my movie camera - tongue in cheek... None of those will replace my versitile PC. Feature creep would keep them too expensive. Look what happened to those address pims. They sell for $15 bucks and I never see anyone use them any more. JLK Chris wrote:

low end cpus set up with a basic browser , officesuite , and simple desktop are real nice for those who dont need the hosepower or the cost of cutting edge machines. They are realy nice for starter sysystems where some one has never used a pc. They can have email acess , and do basic wordprossesing. Nothing fancy needed. Imusing a p150 with applixware and xfce. Works fine. If you want need more hosepower you can them shell out more money and get a Benz model. Or if you just need basi transport go for the ford escort or the tine euaropean fiat 500. All it means is more chioces for the masses. Not every one need a 800 PIII. Im still using the AMDK6400 and will recycly it to a server or plian desktop when I upgrade. No hurry yet , as it does what I need. they know
