SuSE 6.4 boot pb. on Dell 2450 / SCSI Adaptec 7899
I have a pb. when installing SuSE 6.4 on a new Dell 2450 PowerEdge PIII/733 SMP-2 1GB: All kernels that I have tried failed on boot when they try to start the Adaptec 7899 SCSI device driver. The drivers seems to detect the chip but then there is messages about "pid timeout", then "resetting channel", then "trying harder...", then - nothing. I have tested the hardware by formatting the hard disk with Adaptec's AIC-7899 SCSI BIOS V25306, incorporated with the system's BIOS. I have tried to load a network based PC management tool ( http://www.rembo.com) and it sees the hard disk OK, formats it and it installs even SuSE 6.4 on it without any problems. I have several other Dell 2450's around, about one year old, also with Adaptec 7899 and they do work well. I have tried 2.2.14, 2.2.18 and 2.4.2 kernels. All give the above results. The Adaptec's chip version is AIC-7899G, BQECO19, 752812. Thanks for any comments, Petri
Hi Petri, I recently installed SuSE 7.1 with kernel 2.2.18 on a Dell PE 2400 (also has the Adaptec 7899 controler installed, plus a PERC2/DC (AMI Megaraid) Raid-Controler). Then I stepped up to the kernel 2.4 series, and I'm running now the 2.4.2-SuSE kernel, without a problem. The delivered standard kernels from SuSE (2.2.18 and 2.4.0) worked right out of the box, and the higher versions compiled well. The first thing that comes to my mind is: Do you have the right version of the modutils and other required packages? Please see the kernel documentation under [.../linux-source/]Documetation/Changes in the source tree. And the second remark: compile the Adaptec 78xx driver into the kernel, don't load it as a module. It doesn't make sense doing otherwise, and you would need to deal with the initial ramdisk (initrd) booting/loading procedure. Hope this helps, Manuel Elgorriaga Kunze
