I've been using rsync to backup my files. Since the beginning I've been getting this error message: rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(633) How can I find out what these files are? My rsync exclude file is: /proc/ /tmp/ /mnt/ /media/ /data2/ /data1/ Data 1 and two are backup drives. Should I be excluding anything else? I'm using Suse 9.1 and 9.2 Also, this code 23 at main.c were do I find it? It's not on my system. Thanks, Jerome

Thanks Peter, I added it to the exclude list. Through the process of elimination I found the other files that are not being copied and why. Here is a partial list: send_files failed to open "/sys/bus/pci/drivers/Promise Old IDE/new_id": Permission denied send_files failed to open "/sys/bus/pci/drivers/RZ1000 IDE/new_id": Permission denied send_files failed to open "/sys/bus/pci/drivers/SC1200 IDE/new_id": Permission denied send_files failed to open "/sys/bus/pci/drivers/SIS IDE/new_id": Permission denied send_files failed to open "/sys/bus/pci/drivers/SLC90e66 IDE/new_id": Permission denied send_files failed to open "/sys/bus/pci/drivers/Serverworks IDE/new_id": Permission denied send_files failed to open "/sys/class/scsi_host/host0/scan": Permission denied send_files failed to open "/sys/class/scsi_host/host1/scan": Permission denied send_files failed to open "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08.0/0000:01:09.0/fw-host0/00d04b43e0091193/00d04b43e0091193-0/host1/1:0:0:0/delete": Permission denied send_files failed to open "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08.0/0000:01:09.0/fw-host0/00d04b43e0091193/00d04b43e0091193-0/host1/1:0:0:0/rescan": Permission denied The permissions are: drwxr-xr-x for all of them. The owner is root. rsync is being run as root. Any ideas why permission is being denied? Thanks, Jerome

With the 2.6 kernels, /sys is similar to /proc, and should be excluded as well. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

All of it? I put these in my exclude file: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/ /sys/class/scsi_host/ /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ This took care of the error messages. Am I harming my system with respect to restoring by keeping the rest of sys? Thanks, Jerome

Yes, it is dynamic and built (populated) by the kernel.

It is the same as /proc (check your fstab), and I would suggest not keeping any since it is dynamic. I suppose anything you restored there would be overwritten on a boot anyway, but if it was mounted (necessary to write there) it would already have all its info there, and if any hardware, order of plugged slots, etc., has changed, it could cause problems. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

add -vv to your rsync command and capture the stdout to a file.
My rsync exclude file is: /proc/ /tmp/ /mnt/ /media/ /data2/ /data1/ Data 1 and two are backup drives. Should I be excluding anything else? I'm using Suse 9.1 and 9.2
Looks ok to me.
Also, this code 23 at main.c were do I find it? It's not on my system.
My guess is it's gcc runtime error 23, occurring on line 633 of the rsync main.c file. Not enormously helpful to you, unless you're a C programmer looking at the rsync source.
