Hello All, Where is the $WINDOWMANAGER environment variable set for root? I know that for normal users it is in .bashrc in the home folder. Root doesn't have a .bashrc file. TIA Jethro
Well, as far as having a .bashrc as root..you can always do this ... cp /home/<user account> ~/ Do this as root..and you have a working bashrc if you like. :) * Jethro Cramp (jsc@zoo.co.uk) [010307 21:38]: =>Hello All, => =>Where is the $WINDOWMANAGER environment variable set for root? Thanks Ben, I was wondering (but didn't say) if there was a reason that root doesn't have a .bachrc e.g for security reasons. I guess as you've said I can make a .bashrc file in /root then I guess it is OK! Jethro
*grin* well, I am certainly NOT God when it comes to answers ... but I haven't come across any issues with having a .bashrc in my root account. If I were on a production system. I would remove pretty much everything out of roots path depending on what I was doing ..and make it so full path execution were needed..but then again I am paranoid ;) * Jethro Cramp (jsc@zoo.co.uk) [010307 23:33]: =>Thanks Ben, => =>I was wondering (but didn't say) if there was a reason that root doesn't =>have a .bachrc e.g for security reasons. => =>I guess as you've said I can make a .bashrc file in /root then I guess it is =>OK! -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org ----- If two men agree on everything, you can be sure that only one of them is doing the thinking.

he reason is very subtle: we discourage the use of the root account for "normal" work and therfore make it a bit more "uncomfortable". However, you can simple copy the contect of /etc/skel into /root, if you want to have a normal working environment.

Yes, that should not be a problem. Bye, LenZ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 http://www.suse.de/~grimmer/ 90443 Nuernberg, Germany Usually insane; in lucid moments merely stupid.
