[SLE] howto go back to first kernel?
I have been playing around with compiling my kernel for about a week. Most of the things I would like to see working are not working for me and I have opted to simply go back to the kernel that SuSE 6.3 put onto the machine. How do I do that? No, I did not backup the file like I should have:( -- Sam Carleton ------------ http://www.bigfoot.com/~scarleton (Homepage) http://www.uptimes.net/hostinfo.html?hid=1218 (Linux Box) -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I think Yast has somewhere an option to "choose boot kernel" You will need your installation CD-Rom to install it. cll -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

What do you mean by "I did not backup the file like I should have"? Unless you deleted the entry from /etc/lilo.conf and removed the original kernel from the /boot directory, you should be able to boot with the original kernel by typing 'suse' at the LILO prompt. To see a list of choices when you are at the prompt, press TAB. Not by default, Chris ;). Go into YaST, System Administration, Kernel and bootconfiguration, Select boot kernel (you need CD1 inserted to do this). Pick the one that you need, install it, and go directly back to a console. Edit /etc/lilo.conf so that you have an entry like: # Stock SuSE Kernel image = /boot/stock root = /dev/hda6 label = stock Set label to whatever you like. Now go to /boot and cp the vmlinuz file to a file called stock, and run lilo. Now you have the option of using the default kernel on-demand. -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | Kansas City, MO /\\ 816-241-2641 x107 | http://www.atipa.com _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Hmmm. Oh well. I was under the impression that when YaST originally installed the kernel, it created two entries in /etc/lilo.conf called 'linux' and 'suse', both pointing to the same kernel. I thought it was doing this in case someone overwrote their current kernel with a new one, without making a backup of the original. Mind you, I haven't installed a copy of SuSE for months, so I can't be sure :( Sorry for the confusion, Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
