[opensuse] How to let Skype 4.0.0.7. find libstdc++.so.6.
Hi, After an attempt to link the file, but not completely understand what to do, i understand now following: The library: libstdc++.so.6, which skype is looking for, is provided by libstdc++45. This library lives in /usr/lib , where skype looks. Unfortunately this version of skype looks for: GLIBCXX_3.4.15, which should provide libstdc++.so.6. GLIBCXX_3.4.15 does not exist, but skype is not told to look for: libstdc++44, or libstdc++45 or GLIBCXX_3.4.15, which all provide libstdc++.so.6. My idea was that it could not be so hard to let skype find this library. But you have to know what to do to accomplish that. As many people use skype, and want to use the latest version, i invite those who might know how to do it, to help, and explain, so other people can benefit from this, and are able to install the latest version also. As far as i can see, there are 3 options: 1) Get: GLIBCXX_3.4.15. That means someone who knows this lib, has to create a package for 11.4, and put it in a repo. 2) Create a fake GLIBCXX_3.4.15, copy libstdc++.so.6 into it, and put it where skype looks for it. (which is a bit strange, because libstdc++.so.6 is where it should be, and where skype looks, but does not find it.) 3) Make skype know the missing lib is not missing. And this is what i was trying to do yesterday. So: a)How do we let skype know that the lib is not missing? b) What are the, eventual, collateral consequences if we succeed? GLIBCXX_3.4.15 is a symbol version of libstdc++.so.6 which is exported by libstdc++ 4.6 or newer. You will need libstdc++46 or libstdc++46-32bit (if you have a 64bit system). GLIBCXX_3.4.15 is a symbol version of libstdc++.so.6 which is exported by libstdc++ 4.6 or newer.
Indeed, you can check the output of readelf -V /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6, it contains the GLIBCXX_3... symbols.
You will need libstdc++46 or libstdc++46-32bit (if you have a 64bit system).

Hi It does have the correct symbols e.g. 2 (GLIBCXX_3.4) 2 (GLIBCXX_3.4) 2 (GLIBCXX_3.4) 2 (GLIBCXX_3.4) I just installed the skype 4.0.0.7 feom here http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-computer/linux /downloading.suse (the address has line wrapped here at least) on a zypper up'd 12.1. No dependency errors. It downloaded to my Downloads folder. I then clicked it, Yast opened and installed it. I found that skype had been added to the start menu under 'Internet'. Clicking skype takes me to a 'Welcome to Skype' windows 'Skype TM 4.0 for Linux' I wonder if the op has an zypper updated 12.1? Fear doesn't realy get you anywhere... and the worst thing that could happen is that my eeepc would explode... but it did not.. ;-) I don't like to manualy copy files somewhere, if i don't have to, if i have a choice: Sophisticated SW, puts all files from the apps i like to use, to the place where they belong! And i love it. :-) I even took the opportunity to make use of: http://software.opensuse.org/search to find the library. How wonderful this service has become! I was amazed to see yast handle everything perfectly, asking me all the questions i wanted her to ask... Realy guys, this is realy approved a lot since the last time i visited, and tried, which probably was too long ago... Again, i am very happy with my new skype toy, and wish to thank all that made it happen... Kind Regards, Rob.

Works just fine, zypper uninstalled the wrapped-skype version, and installed the new 4.0.0.7-suse121. The GUI is indeed much improved. there is at least one other way: 4) the community could package Skype 4 for 11.4 (since it is still supported) and provide it to Skype so they can put it on their page http://www.skype.com/intl/en/get-skype/on-your-computer/linux/ right beside their existing link for "OpenSUSE 12.1 32 bit" (where there should be an "openSUSE 12.1 32 bit" link) as far as that goes, why not make two packages to label as "64 bit" (and include in the rpm all the missing pieces to support Skype on 11.4 and 12.1 64 bit systems..)
