You cannot connect to the server because you don't know the cookie used to authenticate clients. If your home directory is local then setting the environment variable XAUTHORITY to point to the .Xauthority file in your home directory will give you access without using the accursed xhosts command. Or, if the account you're su-ing to isn't root or it's a remote machine, use xauth (man 1x xauth). nextract and nmerge would be the options relevant to this
