Re: [SLE] Second Dial-Up connection ... thumbs down
Thank you. I'm using SuSE 7.3 I haven't had either the time or the courage to update to 8.0 given my past experience at making version 7.3 recognize the modem !! I understand Kinternet Log file is the crucial info for anyone to help me with this problem. However my question for you is now "how can I post this Log file ??" If I right-click on the plug icon a window opens up showing the Log-Kinternet, sure ! But such a window does NOT have menu option to record what is shows to a file NOR it allows me to cut and paste !!! That's why I took two snapshots and tried to post them to the SuSE mailing list .. as the only way I could find to post the Kinternet Log file !!! Unfortunately images (bit maps) take a lot of space ... Maura Anders Johansson wrote:
Hi Maura,
Your attachments were stripped from the posts to the lists, they didn't get through. In your first mail with wvdial.conf you posted your password. I suggest you get the administrator to change it immediately, before other people start abusing your account.
Which SuSE version are you running? In 8.0 KInternet doesn't use wvdial.conf, it uses /etc/sysconfig/network/providers/<provider file>
The interesting thing you should post is the log (right-click on kinternet and select "view log")

I've added a second dial-up connection by Yast2. It uses the same modem but connects to a different server "petmr5" where I was told I have an account whose username is "maura" and same password as for the other account on the server "artsci".
When I right-click on the "plug" icon and the Kinternet menu pops up I can select either provider "artsci" (the previous connection) and "permr5" (the new connection). However, when I pick "arsci" and dial in then I hear the characteristic modem noise followed by data flowing in the "plug" that then shows up "coupled with a couterpart plug" and from here on my internet connection is up and running. Instead, when I pick "petmr5" I still hear the characteristic modem noise but cannot see any data flowing into the "plug" and the plug icon never couples whith a counterpart plug and such a connection is left pending !!! Moreover if I right-click on the open plug the Kinternet menu pops up but the item "Check connection" is greyed out in this case. If I select the item "View datarate" from such a menu then I see that no data is being transferred !
I'm too unexperienced at connections to be able to tell on which side is the fault ... my computer (my connection set-up) or "petmr5" server ... I'd greatly appreciate some help at figuring out what is wrong. I'm sending on a separate message tar file (tar cvZf DialUpTar wvdial.conf snapshot1.png snapshot2.png) containing "wvdial.conf" and two snapshots showing the wvdial Log file.... BTW: I ignore where the wvdial Log file is saved ???
Thank you in advance for your help.

You could do "wvdial petmr5 > logfile 2>&1". That should redirect all output from wvdial to the file "logfile". After you've edited out the password you could post that file. regards Anders
Thank you. I did what you suggested and I'm attaching the wvdial logfile. I also spoke to the s/w admiinistrator of the Med. campus. He said a terminal should pop up asking for username and password as their modem is old-fashioned. They have planned to upgrade it soon ... but I do not not how soon is "soon" for them ! Basically there is no such terminal popping up when I try to connect. I think I have to write a bash script to this purpose ... to be blunt I do not know how to start at it ! Can anyone give me some guidlines ?? Maura Anders Johansson wrote:
