[opensuse] Font size when viewing messages in Thunderbird
Most of the messages I read in Thunderbird are displayed in the font and size that I want, but some are displayed in a smaller font size. In particular, messages from Basil Chupin and Billie Walsh are displayed smaller. I am using Thunderbird 14.0 on KDE 4.9 on openSUSE 12.1. I notice that Basil is also using Thunderbird 14.0, but so is Carlos Robinson and his messages display correctly (from my POV). Is this something I can adjust at my end or is it set in the sending User-Agent? I prefer to read all messages in the same font size, as it is less tiring. As email *is* a text function, display your email as text rather than pretty-font-html-or-what-ever-else. You *can* set the font-size on *your* display. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well, that's exactly what I'm trying to achieve, but I find the Thunderbird dialogues unclear. Under Preferences > Display > Formatting > Default Font I have sans-serif size 14 and under ..Plain text messages, I have Style: Regular, Size: Regular. Is there a setting somewhere else that I have missed? I also have observed that some messages have bigger fonts and some smaller, but I don't know why. With plain text there should be no difference. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. i think that's got to do with character sets. can be overridden somewhere at least in some clients, but it's never bohered me enough to investigate further. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Fonts and font sizes are set per character set. Check the advanced options behind the font setting. There might be different settings for "Western" and "Other" for example which translates to ISO-8859-1 and UTF-8. At least that's the usual reasonfor different font sizes in different mails (also HTML mails can be a reason). That’s right. For all messages to use the same fonts and fonts sizes, you have to have the same settings for both ‘Western’, ‘Other Languages’ and ‘User Defined’. The same is true for Firefox, BTW. It’s a very annoying and confusing (mis)feature. -- Karl Ove Hufthammer http://huftis.org/ Jabber: karl@huftis.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Unrelated (I think) to the issue of HTML addressed already:
I can't be sure since I use SeaMonkey rather than Thunderbird, and their font
preferences may differ, but I'd focus on your font settings more closely,
particularly, Content-Type. Billie's is windows-1252 8-bit. Basil's is also
8-bit, while yours is 7-bit. IOW, if your preference is only set for your
default content-type, which differs from those used by the emails you read,
you probably should expect differences unless you set all possible types you
might encounter to match your default. Looking at what follows I'd more
likely expect a difference from Billie's than from Basil's, and none from
Carlos'.

[snipped] Actually, setting the font sizes to be the same for Western, User Defined and Other Languages within Thunderbird did the trick. Thanks, Karl. Just for the record, I am using Thunderbird 17.0a1 :-) . Also, I am using UTF-8 character set while most people still use the Western-whatever char. set - if you find some weirdo characters in posts then you get bet your life that this is caused by this difference in char. sets. But to get all messages to display the same way (ignoring the UTF vs Western part) is to deselect in Preferences>Display>Fonts the option to allow messages to display in their preferred fonts - ie, they will be displayed in the fonts you have chosen to be used in TB. I'd already done that, but it didn't have the expected effect. The solution was the one suggested by Karl Ove Hufthammer.
