Yes I should amplify a bit, I'm running an Athlon 64 with 2GB RAM with SATA software Raid5, booting from a Compact flash I'm currently running 3 VMs:

What I want to do is run sub doms, one is a backup for a server, the second a development environment... Any suggestions on where/what to read? Or how to set it up? Ideally you need to install the Xen bits and pieces when you initially install SuSE 10.1 as this automatically sets up grub to support Xen as a boot option. It may do this after the event in 10.1 if you install Xen from Yast, but I haven't tried. If you Google around there is plenty of documentation to be found. Everything you need for Xen in on the SUSE disks open or paid version. If you look at the application selections in the Yast package manager there is a selection called Xen just select it and off you go. Before you create a virtual machine you need to have booted the host machine with a Xen aware kernel (select this in Grub), from then on you can use the Xen install option within YAST. I have a SUSE install directory on my NFS server and always install VMs from this as a network install source. You can in theory install from local CDs/DVD on you host machine but this wasn't very reliable in some of the release candidates and I haven't tried it with the released version. The Yast Xen installer gives you options for setting up a VM, I suggest you initially accept the defaults, you may however want to change the size and location of the virtual disk file, I think the default is 4GB. Once you have one or more Xen VMs up and running you can stop and start them and connect to the console from within Yast although it's pretty simple to do this from the command shell and you have far more utilities available to you this way. I started out the hard way hand crafting VMs with SUSE 10.0 it's a lot easier now in Yast but it does help if you understand the basic principles and the format of the configuration file you need to define and start a VM. This knowledge has enabled my to get Debian and SUSE 9.3 VMs running on my server, although I did need to use VMware to get the base installs working in the first place. Hmmm, I don't seam to find this one.... The documents talk about setting up a disk, and using loop dev, and install into directory... Is this what you mean? Ahh, I see under Yast2->system->XEN->add... Got you...

<snip> For the record... I tried installing Xen after the install on a laptop and it worked... Added XEN as last entry in the GRUB menu, where as when included in initial install it's above the "safe mode"....

After first boot without (!) xen-kernel, config net-devices, increase loopback-devices, adjust default boot kernel in grub, reboot, make blob's for swap-image and root-image. do a dir-install. Create & adjust xen-control-file and try to launch image. Add additional bridges if needed. If dom-U comes up ok (net & disks), fill it with all the software you need, if possible through an install server) Finally, resize and split root partitions into several dedicated (/, /var, /usr, /opt, /srv, /tmp, /home) partitions Adjust xen-control file again (for the extra partitions), and voila! (Untill now, the xen-tool in yast only creates panics for me.) Hans, can we make the steps you did together again so that I can get a success story soon please? 1. install Linux from the DVD 10.1 with: a. as suggested with KDE ... 2. try to restart and the system hangs (as with previous installations) The screen turns black and a little white cursor is in the upper left corner. Reset and login as root test network connection, ... is ok How do I increase loop back devices? logout for restart: system hangs as before!!!!
