YOU keeps offering updates I can't use
Hi, YOU periodically asks me to update my 9.3 system, but among the offerings are dozens of foreign language updates to Open Office that I can't use and haven't installed. There are also updates to Nvidia drivers (I have anATI card), and some other such stuff. I've been completely unsuccessful in making these offerings go away, so each time I get an update, I have to look through dozens of these garbage (for me) lists to find the two or three items I need. Is there really no way to make them disappear short of installing the software, then allowing the updates? John Perry

Why do you find it necessary to look through all of them. All of the updates that apply to the packages you have installed will be on the top of the list, or at least that has always been the way it worked for me. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

John. If you do a right mouse button click (while on the YOU page after getting the list of available updates) you should get a menu offering a number of options. One of which is to never upgrade the 'checked' items. I don't think that's the actual wording but you should see what I mean. I think, but may wrong, that it also allows you to permanently hide unwanted updates. I think you need to check all the unwanted updates first then I cannot remember if it is the left or right hand pane that you need to do the right hand mouse click. Try it and see :-) -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care. Kevan, I tried but all I could do was mark certain undesired updates as "taboo." But they still all display. If there's a way to permanently remove these "taboo" updates so they never display again, that would be wonderful. Gil

Hmmm, it sounds as though all those various language packs are installed on your PC then. I could be wrong of course but it seems this way. That may be why YOU is offering to update them. I'll check my SuSE box and see how I did it. I'm sure I don't have a lot of unwanted stuff coming up. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care. Wow, that would really be strange. I know for certain that I did not ask to have any language packs installed when I put 9.3 on the box, and it's been the same way with every version of SuSE I can remember. Same for my wife's computers. We always are offered the language packs despite the fact that we did not intentionally install any of them. Any added info you discover would be appreciated. Gil

OK, this makes a kind of sense. It unnerved me that some packages appeared at the end of the list early on, then all the junk just stayed there. I had noticed that I didn't find anything new at the end of the list or inside the list in the last few updates, but having many appear after the first update in the first few updates was troubling. And all installed updates disappearing after I let them install reinforced the impression that I might be missing something. Why would it be useful to display taboo updates (i had tried this, too)? I can see turning the display on later in case I might change my mind, but defaulting to show something I've refused explicitly? John Perry

I might be wrong, but I thought in the 9.x series there was an option to hide them. I'm pretty sure I remember having to show all in order to see all those foreign language addons. Might be wrong about this. :P Regardless, I agree. They should be hidden by default. Perhaps this was seen as a bad thing by some. If you happen to taboo something, it's out of sight, out of mind - you never think to look for it again. Unless you make a habit of perusing the All list occasionally, something important might be missed. Maybe it was seen as potentially dangerous due to human error. The 'Smart Package Manager' has Tool and Menu bar features that can be used to achieve this. I believe that some posts to this list have suggested that in SuSE 10.1, 'YOU' will be supplanted by 'Smart'. mikus

One issue I found is that there is a problem with the RPM signatures. I run a local YOU server and it was having trouble downloading these patches. Here's how I fixed it: In the syncfile that the server creates I added a -n (don't check sigs) to the line that contains the SuSE version having problems. The file can be found under /var/lib/YaST2/you. There is also a way you can use online-update on the command line to do updates also: simply run online-update the -V option so you can see what it's doing and -n to not check sigs. If you want to be more security conscious find the rpm the sig check fails on and import the sig. I think it's an OpenOffice one if I remember correctly. Craig Herring
