I'll try this again... I need assistance getting a kernel compiled from the source provided on the 6.3 CD's or downloaded from SuSE to recognize the Promise Ultra66 disk controller (PDC20262). The precompiled kernel does, but I have been unable to get any kernel I compile to do so. Is there anyone I can go to for this kind of support? Even for $? Or am I just stuck with no help here... This is the fifth post on this question. I hope an answer, or at least a response is forthcoming. First, have you contacted SuSE support? That's what they are there for. You might want to go through xconfig and make sure you have all the proper options checked. On 23 Mar 00, at 15:09, Mark Thornton wrote:

Enable [*] Generic PCI IDE chipset support [*] Generic PCI bus-master DMA support [*] Use DMA by default when available [*] PROMISE PDC20246/PDC20262 support in the kernel configuration, recompile, reboot -- that's all. If you want you can then use hdparm to tune some settings. The problem is the last option does not appear in my 6.3, kernel 2.2.13
configuration, either through 'make menuconfig' or 'make xconfig'. Do I need
to get a later copy of the distro or did I do something wrong when I
installed the source.

Make sure you have the following enabled in Code maturity level options: [*] Prompt for developement and/or incomplete code/drivers and in block devices: [*] Other IDE chipset support. Are you using the 2.2.13SuSE kernel? I know that it's in there, I'm using an HPT366 in my workstation at home and I've seen the promise option every time I've recompiled. Otherwise, you could try going to www.kernel.dk and grabbing the IDE patch (assuming that you're using a clean source tree, it won't work if the tree is already patched) -- Ray Schwamberger Linux Technician Atipa Linux Solutions -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Plus `[*] PCI support'. If this doesn't help, try deleting /usr/src/linux/.config, and starting your kernel configuration from scratch. Basically yes, but not for problems with compiling your own kernel. That's
clearly stated in Appendix H of the manual. Our support would only point him
to the precompiled kernel, which, as stated, does work.

Works, up to a point! I don't think it is valid to cut off support when the product you deliver cannot recreate the precompiled kernel when that is so often required to undertake many of the tasks in which Linux obviously outshines other OS possibilities. It comes close to a bait and switch to lure someone in with a slick kernel that does everything and really gets someone converted from the evil empire, only to have the promise fall apart when the system can't be tailored to a specific task as many of the published HowTo's describe. All I wanted was a way to reproduce the delivered kernel. You chose not to provide that information, either in suitable source code or technical note in your tech support site to direct me on how to achieve similar results. If it were not for some wise folks on this list I would be very distressed over the state of Linux affairs, and my ability to rely on it.
