Check /var/log/messages and /var/log/XFree86.0.log. I had similar problems on various versions of SuSE which mysteriously developed, I could login to kde as root, but not as a user. I finally trace it to some "Permission Denied" messages, somehow all my /usr/X11R6 directories and files were changed to drwx------ and rwx------. Regards Sid.

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be my problem, as all those permissions are Ok, and other users can run X from runlevel 3 CLI, just not me.
