I just read an article showing SUSE Linux is now going too be on Dell systems, and won't cost more like it used too over RedHat, as they made you pay for custom options. One step forward again, good job Dell.

I got my Inspiron 8000 Notebook about 4 years ago and it came with linux (SuSe 7.2 i think) on it, no extra cost, I just had to find someone in Dell back then that knew what I was talking about. It even had shrink wrapped win-me and the rest of that stuff in the box as well. !up the penguin scsijon

That is what I was going at pretty much. I don't like RedHat at all, so this would make me think of Dell for an upgrade over someone else if I can have SuSE on the servers, and I believe HP and IBM allow Linux configurations on them too. If I get this job working at my college, I'll be planning upgrades and OS choices and basically being a sys admin, so I'd be able to generate some sales there.
Allen,
Hope you get your way.Good Luck.

IIRC IBM offers SuSE as a choice on it's Linux servers.

Hi, I've got a rather strange problem, I'm running SuSE 9.0 on a Celeron 333 MHz (Mendocino), 256 MByte machine with sufficient HD space available. The machine is a router to the internet from my internal network. I experience the following problem: On high network loads from or to the machine the machine locks up, no messages in the /var/log/messages file, just locking up. Anyone having the same experience or a clue for a solution ? Best regards, Geert-Jan

Check the network card(s) drivers and hardware health. Are the network card(s) OK? Have you swapped them out to verify the hardware is OK? Do they have the correct drivers? Have you tried forcing them to 100Mb and full duplex? If the machine is only used as a router/firewall device have you stopped or disabled any unnecessary software, processes, GUIs, etc? Stan

As a simple test, try BBIagent, http://BBIagent.net, it's simple to get going and a damn good floppy based firewall, managed by any java enabled browser on the network, BTW the default password is BBIagent. If that does the same, hardware it has to be. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer =====LINUX ONLY USED HERE=====

I'll wait to give them kudos until after I see if they'll keep it around this time. Dell offered Linux-ed machines a few years back, but then dropped that option due to lack of interest (possibly because it was nearly impossible to *find* the option). Then again, I ordered some machines from VA Linux at that time, since Dell wasn't very supportive, and look which company is still [effectively] around. :) --Danny, who got a cool shirt from VA, and nothing from Dell :(

My understanding is that they dropped the idea before because of pressure from Microsoft - Dell isn't doing so well now, so maybe they're more prepared to take that risk. I very much doubt that the decision has anything but a commercial basis. I'm a cynic, though.........
