Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear enough on this issue. The LinkSys router is connected to eth0, where DHCP is running and all of my Internet stuff for the family LAN/WAN is running. This functions without a hitch. eth1, that the PB 1400 is connected to is a personal LAN only, that just allows the SuSE box and my PB 1400 to communicate. I am only using this setup to transfer all of my important files from the PB to SuSE. This is part of my migration process away from the Mac OS and am hoping that at some point, I will also be able to get rid of the Win 2k partition on my dual boot box, so everything is pure SuSE. Setting up netatalk beats the hell out of having to transfer everything by Zip disc... that is if it works ;-) This personal LAN uses an ethernet hub with no router involved. I am using Mac OS 9.1 on the PB. Cheers, Brian

Much more clear now ! ;- ) You are using static ip in the eth1 ? tehm usae another static ip in the same range in the pb, the rest is the same in previus msg ! Just in case, you are configured a user to use with PB ? when you enter the "server ip address" you'll need it ! Fábio Rabelo

Done. - Just in case, you are configured a user to use with PB ? when you enter the - "server ip address" you'll need it ! OK, this is the part I haven't done. According to SuSE 7.3 Pro documentation, this should work by default, I am after all the only one using the SuSE box AND I will be the only one using the netatalk connection. but if I have to do it manually, I will need help as I am a still a Linux newbie. I have read the documentation as well as the afpd.conf file and I simply don't get it :-( As far as I can see, there are two issues that I will need to deal with if I have to manually configure: 1) user, and 2) shared directories. That is about as far as my comprehension on this issue goes. Can you walk me through it? Also, is there a netatalk client that will enable me to access the PB from my SuSE box? Cheers, Brian

If you need an "easy way" to configure netatalk, try webmin www.webmin.com the module to configure netatalk is not default, then you must install then after http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/netatalk/netatalk.wbm when you run webmin, go to webmin config =>modules =>instal module from uploaded file and chose the folder you are downloaded the module after the instalation you will setup then .... in suse 7.0 ~ 7.3 is : Atalk ini script = /etc/initd/atalk path to atalkd = /usr/sbin/atalkd path to papd = /usr/sbin/papd path to afpd = /usr/sbin/afpd path to Apple Volumes.default =/etc/atalk/AppleVolumes.default path to Apple Volumes.system = /etc/atalk/AppleVolumes.system path to afpd.conf = /etc/atalk/afpd.conf path to atalkd.conf = /etc/atalk/atalkd.conf path to papd.conf = /etc/atalk/papd.conf path to netatalk.pamd = /etc/pam.d/netatalk path to NLS folder = /etc/atalk/nls Then save it, now configuration is easy ! a last note, by default, the file generated Suse enable only the folder "home" of user to share, with this module you can setup any folder to share, but the rights to access this folder MUST be set separetly, in the module other => file mananger and then select the folder that you want to share in the right windows and select the fuction "info", then set "group" to "read" "write" and in the guide "apply changes to" select "This directory and all subdirectories" . Finaly, the user that are creating this SHARED folder MUST be the same as you create the user to user in autentication of you PB .... I hope this is enough to you, if not, return here ok ? Webmin is installed and looking cool :-) but I have no idea where to set the above defaults in Webmin. BTW, Usermin gives the following error message: "The Usermin config directory /etc/usermin was not found on your system. Maybe Usermin is not installed, or your module configuration is incorrect." Any ideas? Lastly, although I have enabled Java globally in Konq, the applet for the file manager never gets past the loading stage. Cheers, Brian
"The Usermin config directory /etc/usermin was not found on your system. Maybe Usermin is not installed, or your module configuration is incorrect."
in the same menu you found usermin you will found another item called "webmin configuration" within this module you found "webmin modules" and within this last you installs addicional modules, netatalk is installed there ! After module instalation uoy will find them in "server" list, when you enter at the first time the module will call for you all of this parameters .

Did you try Netscape ? I'm do not use KDE, my machines with Graphical interface uses Gnome or XFce, but I don't like KDE . Then, I'll use Netscape ou galeon and with both the file mananger works fine ! Fábio Rabelo

OK, here is the state of affairs at this time: 1) Webmin is installed and seems to on the whole be working. 2) Netalk configuration file paths have been set as per earlier instructions. 3) Still no change in log in status from my PB 1400. This is regardless of whether the visible AppleShare server in the Chooser window or whether I choose the server IP address option, i.e.: Instead of a blank form (space) for "name" and "password", I am presented with a scroll bar for each. When I run the arrow cursor over each, it turns into a text cursor and I am unable to scroll up or down in either field. This is also the case with the IP address option. 4) The File Manager java applet for Webmin will not load with Konq. I get the message "applet loading" but nothing happens. A way around the conundrum with the log on may be to manually add a user and a password to the relevant netatalk files - if I only knew how. I have read the documentation in SuSE 7.3 Pro, but can't say I am any clearer how to do this. Alternatively, if I knew how (is it possible?), I would attempt a log on to the PB from SuSE. 5) For some reason, the help directory for Webmin /usr/libexec/webmin/netatalk/help/i was installed as locked and Webmin cannot access it. So much for the Webmin "help". 6) Miscellaneous Options for the Webmin netatalk module returns a Perl script error. This option specifies the maximum number of connections to allow. The error reads as follows: "HTTP/1.0 500 Perl execution failed Server: MiniServ/0.01 Date: Mon, 20 May 2002 16:54:26 GMT Content-type: text/html Connection: close Error - Perl execution failed file not readable at ./netapple-lib.pl line 688." So, the bottom line is that despite my installing Webmin and all of Fábio's time and help, I am not any further to solving my problem. Sigh! Brian

No no !!! you MUST enter the ip address in chooser ! No "server" will apears in this window until you enters the ip off the server at the first time !

User and password MUST be the same you are created to use with your PB in the Linux Box, remember, Linux/Unix is a SECURE server, there are no "guest" to views the content, until you entrer a VALID username and password no access to you will be granted !

Again, try Netscape, I never used Konqueroro or anything in KDE to manange files in the webmin, but if you use webmin in MAC just Netscape 4.7 and IE5 works ! Opera, Netscape 6.x, Mozilla or IE 6 Doesn't work att all, and the simtoms is the same you are describing in Konqueror !
5) For some reason, the help directory for Webmin /usr/libexec/webmin/netatalk/help/i was installed as locked and Webmin cannot access it. So much for the Webmin "help".
This I dont shure, maybe usar ?
6) Miscellaneous Options for the Webmin netatalk module returns a Perl script error. This option specifies the maximum number of connections to allow. The error reads as follows:
It is a bug in the module, my system pewsents the same msg, dont't worry, this bug will be fix soon ( I hope ! ;- ) )
"HTTP/1.0 500 Perl execution failed Server: MiniServ/0.01 Date: Mon, 20 May 2002 16:54:26 GMT Content-type: text/html Connection: close

How can I find out info about how to configure other modules in Webmin, such as usermin? Usermin is listed as being at /etc/usermin, but this apparently not the case in SuSE 7.3. If I could just get these paths sorted out, Webmin would definately be my admin tool of choice :-) Cheers, Brian
