It depends on your mothertongue. If I pronounce it in my native language (what is not much different from English) the way you describe , you wouldn't have a clue what I was talking about. /bill

It's typically pronounced Soo-zah. As in John Philip Sousa. Interestingly, 'suse' is the Swedish onomatopoeic term for the sound which a breeze makes in the leaves of trees. In which case, it's pronounced soo-sha. BTW, If you use the term 'onomatopoeic ' in a sentence, no one will ever think of you as an idiot - Instead, you'll be considered pretentious. Additionally, if you use the word 'pretentious' in a sentence, people will consider you droll. Hmm.. As a Swede, i cant find "suse" in my language.. "sus" and "susa" is there.. but no "suse" "Sus" is used as "a hush went through the crowd" or the sound of the wind through the trees... I'm not a Swede, but the information above was related to me by my stepfather, a Swedish-speaking Finn, as I happened to notice that we were driving over the "Suse" river in Sweden. -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER@CONSOLIDATEDLINT.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE

An older SuSE distro had some sounds demo, including a linus-english.au and a linus-swedish.au, which were, of course, a recording of how Mr. Linus pronounces "Linux". How about SuSE doing the same? :-p X-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
There used to be adds in a Linux mag (Linux Journal ??) with a guy instructing --- "Say Soooo-Sah". At work I and colleagues say Soo-Seh, and to a friend and long time user, I say suse because he does. Regards Sid. Carlos E. R. wrote:

Mmmm... but english is not my first language, despite my surname. I know how to pronounce words in english because at some time I memorised both the written word and the sound: I don't really know how a certain combination of letters are pronounced :-) Have you seen this? It "proves" my point - it's some spellings written by George Bernard Shaw: fish - GHOTI potato - GHOUGHPTEIGHBTEAU fish: gh as in enough; o as in women; ti as in nation Sure enough, it's FISH! POTATO is even more fun -- p as in hiccough o as in though t as in ptomaine a as in neigh t as in debt o as in bureau (seen in webster's bad speller's dictionary) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

there is no P sound in hiccough... unless it's those damn Yanks messing up their pronunciations again... The "gh" is a f sound as in cough...

There is for me, it's /hik-up/. Dylan (British born and bread) -- Sweet moderation Heart of this nation Desert us not We are between the wars - Billy Bragg
I've always said 'soos'. Not that it matters much. As long as the person you're communicating with understands, it's all good. -JM Dylan wrote:

Well, I have heard some very weird pronunciations and one that nearly ended up in disaster. One guy said: Suh-sey (This is the closest that I can try in English). This sounds like a derivative of the Afrikaans for sister (sussie (from suster = sister) - Dutch is probably the same). In any case it caused confusion, as the sentence that he used it in sounded very bad. I understood he wanted to do things with my sister and he had to explain very nicely what he meant ... Well, I drilled the correct pronunciation of SuSE into him... As always when this question comes up, it's provided entertaining answers. My opinion is that you should pronounce it as those letters would be pronounced in your dialect. Here - in North East Scotland - we call the capital of France "Paris", not "Paree". And the letters "SuSE" would naturally be pronounced "Sooze". Should I proclaim my (non-existent) knowledge of German by pronouncing it (roughly) "Zoozah" (as the Germans seem to say I should)? Certainly not! That might cause people to search for a Linux distribution that doesn't exist (in our tongue). In summary, of course SuSE is distributed by a German company and I understand that Germans want it to be pronounced correctly. But, my view is that we should pronounce is as it will be understood in our locality. So, for me it's "sooze". For Americans that might be "soozie". Who cares? What's important is to pronounce it so that the people we are talking to understand what we are talking about, -- Vic Ayres
I trust we can all pronounce SuSE now? If not, please continue on suse-ot. Thanks, -- -ckm
