Hi all, Sorry If you've read this story again and again, but this problem is begining to irritating me. SuSE 8.2, Motherboard Abit NF-s with via8233 soundchip. I CAN ear the music when KDE starts, I CAN ear the sound when I press the probe button when configuring in YAst2, I CAN even hear my ogg/mp3 files with XMMS but I CANNOT ear any CD nor DVD/xine sound :-(. I tried to configure with alsamixer, with alsaconf (as root), I tried most of the hints I read in the list without success. Am I missing something?. Help is needed :) Guillermo -- Guillermo Ballester Valor registered linux user #117181 gbv@oxixares.com Ogijares, Granada SPAIN

Those are two separate problems. For xine, the SuSE package is misbuilt. Get fixed packages at packman.links2linux.de For the CD sound, there are two possible answers 1. Your CD doesn't have a cable running from the CD to the sound card Solution: Either get one of those cables and plug it in, or try to find the cdparanoia plugin for xmms and use it to play 2. Your CD does have that cable but still won't play CDs Solution: start up gamix and play with the sound settings until you find the right knob to tweak
Hi Anders: I solved xine problems :) . Yes, as you said, I reinstalled Xine packages from packman site (using apt-get) and all runs OK . I still have no time to see whether I have the proper cable from the CD-drive to MB (where the sound chip is), I will see it tomorrow. Playing with gamix still have not succeded. Well, happy at 50% :) Thanks Anders. Guillermo. On Sunday 20 July 2003 23:07, Anders Johansson wrote:

I went through the exercise with the libdvdcss2 from packman site, still no sound. In force installed mplayer 0.90-1 inplace of the 0.90-rc4 that was already there. Now I have audio but no video, just a blue screen! Art On Sun, 2003-07-20 at 14:07, Anders Johansson wrote:

You need to install all packages from the page, not just libdvdcss2, look at the list labelled "zusätzlich benötigte Binär-Pakete" Also, don't ever use --force. To install MPlayer 0.90-1, use -Uvh --oldpackage. And the sound problem is for xine only, I believe. For mplayer, I *think* you need all the packages. But even if you don't it's a good idea to get them anyway, since they're newer.
I got all of the packages at packman and installed them already. Art On Sun, 2003-07-20 at 16:54, Anders Johansson wrote:

Got vidio and sound at the same time by selecting X11Shm for the video driver, but the display is so small, about a 10 th of the screen. (I am running 1920X1620 resolution). Before when the video wa playing, I could get the video full screen with xv driver. Looking at the console output when I use the xv driver, or the X11Shm, I get a "VDecoderer init failed :(". I also get a "The selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec" Art On Sun, 2003-07-20 at 16:54, Anders Johansson wrote:

Do you have the accelerated drivers installed for your video card? Check /var/log/XFree86.0.log and see if XVideo gets loaded
Yes, the xvideo extension is loaded. This is an NVIDIA GeForce4 4200 Art

hm, nvidia. Just out of curiosity, run "glxinfo|grep rendering" and see if it's turned on. The reason is that SuSE's X server will overwrite the nvidia accelerated driver if you update it, and there was recently an update in YOU. So check that you still have acceleration
Yes it is and I finally got is working with xv. I went out of KDE and back in and it started working. Sill has the "VDecoderer init failed :(". and "The selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec" though when looking at the console output. Strange! I have the same problem with Inspiron 8500 and 8.2 exactly. Hope you find out what it is. Art On Sun, 2003-07-20 at 13:34, Guillermo Ballester Valor wrote:
