I am trying to stop SuSEfirewall from loading during boot time. So, when I chkconfig it off, it complains: ... newone:/etc/sysconfig # /sbin/chkconfig SuSEfirewall2_init off /sbin/insserv failed, exit code 0 newone:/etc/sysconfig # /sbin/chkconfig | grep SuSE SuSEfirewall2_final on SuSEfirewall2_init on SuSEfirewall2_setup on ... When I also try to use YAST, there is a failure to turn it off. Unfortunately, there are no errors in the messages file. Is my only way to edit the actual init script and remove the start levels? Or, am I missing some software? Thanks eric

You need to do it in the proper order chkconfig SuSEfirewall2_final off chkconfig SuSEfirewall2_setup off chkconfig SuSEfirewall2_init off or you could go to yast2->security & users->firewall and tell it to disable the firewall

chkconfig SuSEfirewall2_final off chkconfig SuSEfirewall2_setup off chkconfig SuSEfirewall2_init off

None of the above works. Here is the chkconfig output: Nov 15 17:50:40 newone sudo: eric : TTY=pts/2 ; PWD=/home/eric ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/bin/bash newone:/etc/sysconfig # /etc/init.d/SuSEfirewall2_final stop newone:/etc/sysconfig # /etc/init.d/SuSEfirewall2_setup stop Shutting down the Firewall (and disabling routing) done newone:/etc/sysconfig # /etc/init.d/SuSEfirewall2_init stop newone:/etc/sysconfig # /sbin/chkconfig SuSEfirewall2_final off /sbin/insserv failed, exit code 0 newone:/etc/sysconfig # /sbin/chkconfig SuSEfirewall2_setup off insserv: Service SuSEfirewall2_setup has to be enabled for service SuSEfirewall2_final insserv: exiting now! /sbin/insserv failed, exit code 1 newone:/etc/sysconfig # /sbin/chkconfig SuSEfirewall2_init off /sbin/insserv failed, exit code 0 newone:/etc/sysconfig # /sbin/chkconfig | grep SuSE SuSEfirewall2_final on SuSEfirewall2_init on SuSEfirewall2_setup on

So it's crashing. If you run strace -o insserv.strace insserv -vr SuSEfirewall2_final and mail me the file insserv.strace I might be able to see what's tripping it up
