Well, both Best Buy and CompUSA won't be getting it until October 23, or so they told me when I called last week. I called both in the Dallas and Oklahoma City areas. I never thought I'd say this, but I can't wait till I move back to New Jersey, at least they have a better selection of stores ;) I ended up ordering it from Suse.com on Thursday night. UPS' first tracking was 2 hours later! The US shipping company SuSE picked is phenomenal! I should have it by tomorrow (and it was sent UPS ground). : -----Original Message----- : From: Jerry A! I made the mistake of "pre-ordering" (either I don't know what this means, or the business world doesn't, because it sounds like you should get the thing on the release day, doesn't it?) from Amazon.com and further complicated it with "Super Saver Shipping" which is free for things over $25. Well, according to the info on the amazon site, the "expected delivery date" isn't until the 25th! Last time, for 8.0, I "pre-ordered" from the local CompUSA here in Santa Rosa and only had to wait about a week past the release date. I bet next time I'll end up "pre-ordering" from someone else and have to wait a full month! -- Bryce Hardy (Santa Rosa, CA) brycehdy@sonic.net

Hi Bryce I Live in Santa Rosa, but work in San Jose. Fry's will most likely have it, in fact, I will be picking up a copy tomorrow when I go to work. (I work Tuesdays thru Fridays). Next time, let me know and I can pick up a copy for you. Art On Mon, 2002-10-07 at 19:53, Bryce Hardy wrote:

Why didn't you order your distro from suse.com? I've ordered mine from 'em, received it last friday, and installed on my boxes, on my home network during week-end. At least, when you order from SuSE site, all the sales profits go to SuSE. And they ship their distro very efficiently. It was the same for 8.0! Le Lundi 7 Octobre 2002 16:53, Bryce Hardy a écrit :

I think I'm going to copy Ben's solution next time and just go down to Oakland and get it at the office. If it's within walking distance of the BART station I can take the train from Richmond. I don't use credit cards so I can only order online from places that accept checks/money orders etc. -- Bryce Hardy (Santa Rosa, CA) brycehdy@sonic.net

I don't know why *he* didn't do that, but I know why *I* didn't do that. I ordered 8.0 from SuSE.com, and I got it in good time... but I paid nearly double for it. I'm in Canada. When stuff comes across the border, you can either have it shipped postal, and then live in hope (because it can't be tracked once it crosses) or have it shipped courier and pay extra, plus brokerage. And either way, the currency exchange is a killer. This time, I ordered from Camelot in Montreal, who are offering free shipping in Canada. Also, because it is across a provincial border I'm not charged the provincial sales tax... only the federal one. However, all is not rosy. It's been over a week and I haven't seen my 8.1. (sigh! moan!) (need fix.... need fix now... must find vein.... :-) /kevin

Yeah, try doing it in Australia that way... The Australian distributor / agent (www.everythinglinux.com.au - shameless plug - HI ANTHONY !!) will have it for $162.95, IF it ever gets here - add, say, $10 for shipping. So figure that at the current exchange rate; $172.95AUD - $95.13US - #60.77GBP - $151.38CAD - 96.99EURO And, just for the hell of it - 1613.75 Pesetas !! The OfficePro CD is $59AUD - work it out for yourselves... No wonder a group want to get together and buy a copy of the OfficePro CD and "share" it !!! ------------------------------------------- Regards, Jon - Never start a project until you've picked out someone to blame.
