Morten, I am not sure whether this applies to your case as you don't seem to have a network printer, but I have had a very similar problem with remote printing ("no daemon present"). The cause was that SuSE 6.3 contains a defective package for remote printing. If you upgraded from 6.3 to 6.4 as suggested in your message maybe this package wasn't replaced. See the documentation from the SuSE website below. (The phrasing "especially with network printers after updating ..." should be taken with a grain of salt: I started with 6.3 and also had the problem. So perhaps the same applies to non-network printers.) Evert Printing: Problems with Network Printers with SuSE Linux 6.3 Applies to SuSE Linux: Version 6.3 Symptoms Problems printing under SuSE Linux 6.3, especially with network printers after updating to SuSE Linux 6.3, although no problems were encountered before the update. Cause The package lprold on the SuSE Linux 6.3 CDs is defective. Solution Replacing the lprold package with that from the SuSE Linux 6.2 CDs should function equally as well as upgrading to the newest version. Therefore, there are two alternatives: 1) Replace the version found on the 6.3 CDs with that found on the 6.2 CDs: Under ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/6.2/suse/n1/ you can find the same version found on the SuSE Linux 6.2 CDs. (We suggest this file be saved under /root/lprold.rpm.) Stop the lpd service with the command: /sbin/init.d/lpd stop Make a copy of the printer configuration file (this will be used again later) with the command: cp /etc/printcap /etc/printcap.backup Deinstall the SuSE Linux 6.3 lprold package with YaST: Choose/Install Packages, then Delete Packages. Mark the package lprold to be deleted: [X] lprold (BSD Print Spooling System), then press [F10]. At the Query window confirm the deletion. You may decide to make a backup of the files to be deleted in the next window. After this return to the Main Menu, then exit YaST. Install the SuSE Linux 6.2 package lprold with YaST: Choose Choose/Install Packages, then Install Packages. Press [ENTER] to select the installation media ( if you followed our advice the file can be found under the directory --> /root/lprold.rpm ) Mark the package lprold.rpm to be installed. Press [F10] to commit the installation. Press [ESC] to return to the Main Menu, then exit YaST. Replace the new printer configuration file with the file renamed earlier to /etc/printcap.backup with the command: cp /etc/printcap.sicherung /etc/printcap Restart the lpd service with the command: /sbin/init.d/lpd start 2) Replace the version found on the SuSE Linux 6.3 CDs with the newest version: Under ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/6.3/n1/lprold.rpm you'll find the newest version of the lprold package. Follow the instructions given above, using the newer package. suse-sle@indbakke.dk on 12/06/2000 18:35:10 To: suse-linux-e@suse.com cc: (bcc: Evert ROSSEEL/ISM/SIDMAR/BE) Subject: [SLE] How to print Up to now, I have used SuSE for file- and mail-servers. Now I want to use it to print too. The printer is a HP LaserJet 5L. The linux distribution is SuSE 6.4 (same problem experienced wit 6.3). When I boot the PC with a windows start-disk, I can copy a file to lpt1, and it is received in the printer. I have tried to install a RedHat 6.2, and printing worked. On SuSE I have installed a ljet4 printer with Yast. At boot and shutdown, lpd is started an shutdown. On SuSE nothing happens, when I try echo hello > /dev/lp0 lpc status says queing is enabled printing is enabled no entries no daemon present tunelp /dev/lp0 -s says /dev/lp0 status is 255, uot of paper, on-line What to try??? ...
