grip-3.0.1 source installation
Dear SuSE users, I am using the SuSE 8.0 personal edition. I have downloaded the source code for Grip version 3.0.1. The version 2.94 on the SuSE cd's wasn't working too well for me. Grip (in case you don't know) is a front-end for cdparanoia, cdda2wav and your favorite mp3 encoder (lame, blade etc.) for Gnome. It rips and encodes your cd's and it's very handy. I had successfully compiled Grip 3.0 when i used SuSE 7.3 a couple of months ago and worked fine. In order to compile it (i mean Grip 3.01 while using SuSE 8.0) i had to download some of the development packages for Gnome from SuSE homepage. The development package i really needed was: gnome-libs-devel-1.4.1.7-28.rpm. This package is needed for compiling gnome applications. This package depends on 2 other gnone development packages avalaible for downloading from SuSE site. These are: imlib-devel-1.9.10-392.rpm orbit-devel-0.5.17-3.rpm I successfully installed the imlib-devel package. The orbit-devel package though has one more dependancy. A package called indent. This is the message i take trying to install the orbit-devel: linux:/home/daskas/Downloads/SuSE 8.0 RPM's # rpm -Uhv orbit-devel-0.5.17-3.rpm error: failed dependencies: indent is needed by orbit-devel-0.5.17-3 So i downloaded the source code for this package: indent-2.2.8.tar.gz Indent is a package that changes the appearance of a C program by insert ing or deleting whitespace. I installed it successfully with no errors (the executable in /usr/local/bin/indent and doc in /usr/local/doc/indent). So i now tried to install the orbit-devel package. But i get this: linux:/home/daskas/Downloads/SuSE 8.0 RPM's # rpm -Uhv orbit-devel-0.5.17-3.rpm error: failed dependencies: indent is needed by orbit-devel-0.5.17-3 The same message allthough i 've installed the indent package. After reading this big message ... Has anyone managed to compile latest version of Grip on his/her SuSE 8.0? I can't understand what i am doing wrong.
So i downloaded the source code for this package: indent-2.2.8.tar.gz linux:/home/daskas/Downloads/SuSE 8.0 RPM's # rpm -Uhv orbit-devel-0.5.17-3.rpm error: failed dependencies: indent is needed by orbit-devel-0.5.17-3
Do you see the problem here? You installed indent from source, yet you expect the RPM database to contain it? I'd bet there's a SuSE package of indent available, and yes there is, it's in the 'd' series - head ye over to the FTP server and get it if you want to maintain RPM purity. If you don't care about your RPM deps, and are prepared for things to maybe not quite work properly (for all I know, ORBit may require indent libraries to be in a specific place...), then you could install the orbit-devel package with the --nodeps option. -- James Ogley, Unix Systems Administrator, Pinnacle Insurance Plc james.ogley@pinnacle.co.uk www.pinnacle.co.uk +44 (0) 20 8731 3619 Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.0) Updated GNOME RPMs for SuSE Linux: www.usr-local-bin.org ********************************************************************** CONFIDENTIALITY.This e-mail and any attachments are confidential and may also be privileged.
