[SLE] Re: Homework done ;-) /parport.o char=major=6 prob
in General setup: <M> Paralel port support <M> PC style hardware
In character devices <M> paralel printer support
Further option in block devices might be of interest too: <M> Parport IDE devices
a list of devices and protocolls follows below that.
Thank you for confirming, Juergen, but all the options you mentioned are already enabled. I tried recompiling, but still have the parport - char-major-6 error, and have no clue as to what it means or can do to stop it. The burner is still on the waiting list. I managed to burn several cdrw's (why?), one cdr, but the next two cdr's failed. Thanks a lot anyway for the pains you've taken. fx -- ______________________ Courtesy of SuSE Linux Kernel 2.2.16 (why worry?) <blockquote TYPE=CITE>in General setup: <M> Paralel port support <M> PC style hardware In character devices <M> paralel printer support Further option in block devices might be of interest too: <M> Parport IDE devices a list of devices and protocolls follows below that. </blockquote> Thank you for confirming, Juergen, but all the options you mentioned are already enabled. char-major-6 is easy: it's the lp module alias char-major-6 lp alias char-major-9 st did you compile lp support into the kernel (not as a module)? In that case, you should set alias char-major-6 to off instead of "lp" I get the following parport modules listed: parport_probe 3492 0 (autoclean) parport_pc 7472 1 (autoclean) lp 5412 0 (autoclean) parport 7464 1 (autoclean) [parport_probe parport_pc lp] no clue about "parport_probe". If you used modules, are they in /lib/modules/2.2.16/misc (I find those I listed above in that dir) Did you simply forget / mistype "make modules_install" ? on the verge of beeing clueless now ;-) Juergen -- =========================================== __ _ Juergen Braukmann juergen.braukmann@gmx.de| -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ===========================================_\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

That much I had found out
did you compile lp support into the kernel (not as a module)? In that case, you should set alias char-major-6 to off instead of "lp" I get the following parport modules listed:
parport_probe 3492 0 (autoclean) parport_pc 7472 1 (autoclean) lp 5412 0 (autoclean) parport 7464 1 (autoclean) [parport_probe parport_pc lp]
No I didn't: it is compiled as a module.
no clue about "parport_probe". If you used modules, are they in /lib/modules/2.2.16/misc (I find those I listed above in that dir) Did you simply forget / mistype "make modules_install" ?
on the verge of beeing clueless now ;-)
Come on, brighten up, never admit defeat.... On the brighter side: looking around /usr/src/, I found that the original 2.2.13 (SuSE 6.3) had been repeatedly patched to 2.2.16, and there was a fully functional (i.e including a working parport module) waiting there to be discovered. So I'm back in business now, except that I still have to find out what went wrong. I'm pretty sure what I changed in my last kernel compilation was innocuous (you know, do I need X25 functionalities, wouldn't removing this make my kernel smaller, and all that grown-up newbie stuff..... :-) ) Anyway, your stamina deserves a medal...
