Hi all, I'm planning to reinstall w2k on a pc that has 2 IDE HDD in it. One is running SuSE 8.0 and lilo is boot the boot manager. Now when I reinstall windows it will remove the lilo part in the boot sector on the w2k disk. How can I get lilo to boot w2k again after the w2k installation as I won't be able to boot SuSE anymore I think. Any help would be appreciated. thx, Peter

thx,
If I were doing this I would: 1) Do the re-install of W2K (if you must... :-) 2) Boot from the SuSE 8.0 install CD's (or DVD) and run the 'rescue' system. 3) Mount my '/' partition on /mnt of the rescue system. 4) chroot /mnt (and you are now running your normal 8.0 system. 5) Mount the /boot partition. 6) Run Lilo to re-install lilo in the MBR. The above assumes your /etc/lilo.conf is already set up to boot W2K also but if you're doing a re-install I would assume it is.

See the LILO-crash-rescue-HOWTO. In general: boot from a rescue CD, mount the SuSE's file systems and execute # chroot /rootpart /sbin/lilo It will use the original /etc/lilo.conf to restore the content of the MBR. Then you can boot to Linux again. -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se

First, in Bootloader configuration, I wrote lilo on a floppy to make sure I'll be able to boot SuSE again. (And I tested the floppy, too :-)) After installing w2k I did boot SuSE with the floppy, then rewrote lilo (with YaST) on MBR. If I recall correctly, w2k was idetified automatically by lilo. The questionable part could be that I had already a wME installed, when I started with all above mentioned. But at least that's how you could be able to boot SuSE, I think Hope this will help best regards, Tapio

Rather than LILO, use GRUB as the boot manager. If you want to try this, I can help. On installing 8.1 on my Toshiba, the boot manager would not br written to MBR. Loading GRUB manually was not difficult, provided the partitions of the op. systems are known.
