Media Player for 8.0
What is a good all-in-one media player for 8.0 I want to view, AVI, MPEG, etc. Anything that installs via RPM would be nice. Thanks in advance!

MPlayer. There is a version on the SuSE CDs, but it has various codecs disabled for copyright reasons. So, if you want the widest support (including Quicktime), I'd download it from mplayerhq.hu, although this will mean compiling it yourself. Unless anyone knows of a good RPM of mplayer? Alternatively, you could try xine or ogle, both of which are supposed to be very good. Why, yes. Henne Vogelsang, as part of the Packman project, has RPMs for MPlayer available @ http://packman.links2linux.de/index.php4?action=128 . And they are up to date, e.g., 0.90rc4 RPMs are up. You might have some downloading to do, though, as the RPM is compiled with lots enabled (e.g., lame, xvid, etc.). If you want MPlayer to nicely integrate into your KDE desktop (and who doesn't...), I would recommend installing KMPlayer (http://www.xs4all.nl/~jjvrieze/kmplayer.html). It even has a KPart, meaning it can be embedded into Konqueror. This is great for, say, going to Apple's Quicktime site and viewing the trailers in-place. Thibaut Cousin has RPM available at his APT repository (ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/8.1-i386/RPMS.suser-tcousin/).

IMO, xine has the worst UI I've seen in a while, especially for a media player. Ogle is a DVD-only player, so this would not really hit the description of the original poster's all-purpose media player. Ogle, however, has a nice GUI (Goggles) and it's a better DVD player than MPlayer because of its support for DVD menus (which the MPlayer developers dislike). Hope that helps...

I use mplayer for watching CDs, and prefer it over Ogle - except when the movie has subtitles. Can anyone yell me how to get subtitles working in MPlayer so that I can use it to watch my Jean-Pierre Jenet films? I'll only tell you that I use ythis to get english audio and norwegian subtitling: "mplayer -alang en -slang no " Add appropiate options if needed. -- Leif Mathis Gaup

Surely you mean "watching DVDs" instead of "watching CDs". Anyways, the MPlayer man page is pretty clear about this: -sid <id> (also see -slang option) Turns on DVD subtitle displaying. Also, you MUST specify a number which corresponds to a DVD subtitle language (0-31). For the list of available subtitles, use with the -v option and look at the output. This is where implementation of DVD menus comes in very well. The user does not have to know the ID number of the subtitle; it's just a point-and-click interface.
