Open-Source Community Gets Its Own Courtroom Controversy(OT)

Opps... the 'protocol police' are at it again. Did you NOT see the (OT) in the subject line? Use a filter, man...

Hi, Late last year we here on the list agreed that Fred's posts were acceptable to the community. That doesn't mean that we can't live without them, but it DOES mean that we can live with them. We try to be a tolerant community given that the first purpose of the list is to help others with SuSE, particularly those new to linux. Fred's posting almost always have content that is cogent to linux and frequently to SuSE (and United Linux). I know how irritating some off-topic postings can be; I often ecxersize my 'delete finger'; you can make a filter to automagically eliminate Freds posts. Or as stated, and what I do as i'm interested in what Fred comes across as he tells me what's happening in the BIG community now that i'm no longer in it. Set up a mail directory/folder and Filter Fred's messages in there or filter them to be deleted if you must. shesh! my 2 bits scsijon At 03:35 AM 3/11/03, Peter B Van Campen wrote:

But those of us who live in bandwidth restricted places still have to download OT posts in order to delete them. I pay for every byte I receive, and spam and OT posts are a real nusiance. The only reason I don't complain about Fred's posts is because they very rarely start threads on this list. Hardly anyone seems interested. I don't know why he bothers. That's because he isn't posting them to *start* any threads, the only "threads" that get started are when you seem to complain about it.. He's just posting them for our information. After all, he just puts the web address on it and all the info can be found there and discussed...*there*. Also, since OT posts are so few and far between, there's no way you can justify your complaining about it. Damn son, but you've got a depressing outlook on things. John

Bullshit. He's just started another one: "SCO: We're After IBM, not Linux Developers" and people have started discussing it.
Also, since OT posts are so few and far between, there's no way you can justify your complaining about it.
Yes I can. I didn't ask for it, don't want it, and have to pay for it. That's justification enough. The nusiance factor is just another issue.
Damn son, but you've got a depressing outlook on things.
No I haven't. This discussion goes round every so often, and as a direct response to it, an alternative mailing list was set up for those who want to pursue off topic discussion. The way you say someone has a depressing outlook because they want to keep off topic postings off a mailing list just confirms what's patently obvious from your post: you don't have a clue what you're talking about. -- "...our desktop is falling behind stability-wise and feature wise to KDE ...when I went to Mexico in December to the facility where we launched gnome, they had all switched to KDE3." - Miguel de Icaza, March 2003

Ya, the lx-talk as a great alternative. Problem with it was that Chris Klippel's server was getting hit by spammers, and many started to get spam that belonged to his list. He tried very hard to fix the problem but it became a full time job (damn bottom feeding spammers). Pity though. The way around that is to use TMDA or qconfirm (if using qmail), and have every email confirmed, using ezmlm, or an IP authenticator. This kills 99.9% of all spam. BTW, Curtis... why do you put in your GPG key block on every message you send? Normally, one just puts a sig block, but not the entire key block. You key block can be easily up/downloaded from any PGP server, or something easy on a tag line, like PGP Public Key: mailto:crrey@charter.net?subject=SendPGPKey So any email you receive with the subject: SendPGPKey, will announce to you that someone wants your key. This way, every email you send to the list is about 25 lines shorter, let alone anyone sends you a replay who does not trim messages at all. Those that do trim messages, must trim 25 additional lines. See below... (purposely left in).

We have no highly visible resource or chat area... Surprised no one has registered www.geekosource.org and phpnuke it and add mailing list. Could be a one stop shop for third party RPM's and chat about all things SuSE/Linux related. Matt On Wed, 2003-03-12 at 21:13, Derek Fountain wrote:
Actually the lx-talk list was taken down several months ago due to nothing related to the users. As far as the OT posts..I just procmail them out if the person who posts is nice enough to just put [OT] in the subject.
Yes, shame that. It took a lot of noise of this list. My LUG has opened an off topic chat list for just the same reason.

Yes I can. I didn't ask for it, don't want it, and have to pay for it. That's justification enough. The nusiance factor is just another issue.
My perspective is that you're adding more noise to the list than the original post. A number of people here seem to approve of the post. If you don't like how the list operates, you always have the option of unsubscribing and maybe even setting up your own list. But in the mean time, quit spamming the rest of us with your whining. -- David Benfell, LCP benfell@parts-unknown.org --- Resume available at http://www.parts-unknown.org/resume.html

ARE WE GOING TO HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THIS AGAIN. PLEASE KEEP THIS LIST FOR WHAT IT IS INTENDED FOR, NOT NEWS UPDATES.
No need to shout. I find Fred's posts informative. His posts are maked with a [OT] label. Just filter it out if you do not want to read them. This was agreed in this list some time ago I believe.
Remember : All pcPCs come with a delete button for mail you do not want to read.
I just treat him like any other low frequency spammer: filter him out and try not to get worked up about it. <snip>
You make a fair point but even with restricted bandwidth the messages aren't that long are they. I *do* find the posts interesting and informative. In any case, shall be leave it at that? Agree to disagree? And now on to the next problem.................. :) :) Regards. LW999 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
