[opensuse] cnrenner: Problem with Highpoint Rocket 133 PCI card and OpenSuSE 11.0
Hello, I have been using my computer system successfully under OpenSuSE 10.0, 10.1 and 10.2. My three ATA/IDE harddisks are controlled by a Highpoint Rocket 133 PCI card - and so far the hpt66-driver seems to have worked. I tried to update or install OpenSuSE 11.0 - but that keeps telling me that I do not have any harddisks. So neither installation nor update are possible, although 10.2 continues to work. Could you help me with advice, please? How can I update to OpenSuSE 11.0 - do I need another driver? Where can I get it? HOW DO I GIVE IT TO THE INStALLATION Program? I would be very happy for your support! You should be able to get it to work by using the legacy drivers/ide driver for your card. Read the OpenSUSE 11.0 release notes for how to do this. (You get a chance to do that during the install.) For the new driver subsystem (libata), I believe your card is still experimental. If you can assist in debugging it, you could still open a bugzilla with SuSE and see if they want to use you as a test case. Hi Greg, thank you for that hint. I could not find the regarding OpenSUSE 11.0 release notes, though - are they somewhere on the net, as well? (could not google the regarding ones). Hmmmmmm.... do you know how the legacy ide-drivers are named and where I find them? I guess this is the right track - I am not sure about the details yet. Thanks anyway! Kind regards Christian PS: I found http://forums.opensuse.org/install-boot-login/387430-hard-disks-not-found-is..., but I am completely unsusre if that relates to MY problem, and if so how to make use of it. -- Dr. med. Christian, I just looked in the 11.0 release notes and it does not actually have the reference I thought it did. Regardless, you need to add hwprobe=-modules.pata to the kernel boot parameters. I've have not done so during a 11.0 install myself, so I'm not sure how exactly you get that added to kernel boot params. as root edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and add "hwprobe=-modules.pata" to the "kernel" line Please people, edit away the excessive and unnecessary quotes. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Boot from cd/dvd: At the 'boot screen', type it into the 'boot options field'. hth /jon -- YMMV -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Do you think I risk losing my data if I use that driver for my controller / harddisks? I mean will they work differently with controller/harddisks so that existent data will be destryoed? This is supposed to be an update :-) Kind regards and thank for the help! Christian On Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 08:59:26AM +0200, Jon Clausen wrote:
