System down, not powering up.
Lucky in having a backup PC :) My main has all the music though, and has been running SuSE 9.3 successfully, then one day last week I found the system off, and it would not switch on again (unplugged re-plugged, changed power cord, tried different power supply), still no power. I got a new motherboard, much better one than I had before and I notice a red led light come on when I have the power cord attached and the switch on. Pressing the button on the case results in no power, and I have gone over the reset, power etc switches to no avail. I am guessing the following: CPU died, but not sure if I'd get beeps (its an AMD 2800+). Case switch has malfunctioned. Just wanted to run it by everyone. Many thanks, Matt

I've had a CPU die on me and the PC seemed to still fire up. Nothing worked of course and I suspect it would be a case of which BIOS is being used as to whether you would get warning beeps. Can you bridge the on/off button just to try that? The only other idea is the obvious one of (a) swapping out the CPU with another or (b) trying the original CPU in another system. Good luck. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care. Thanks Kevan, If you had a CPU die on you and the system still powered up I feel pretty confident that my CPU should be OK. Could do with a new case I guess...Shame that shipping costs more than the case itself :). As I already tried a known good power supply I feel confident its the switch. Its certainly not the m/board. May still try bridging the switches between cases to see what happens, just to make one final assessment. Thanks for answering, I know this is OT, but wanted to run this issue past others, in case someone had a similar issue. Many thanks, Matt

I recently had a CPU die with the same symptoms. With the CPU in an old mobo I had around, it fired up, but didn't work. I suppose it is down to the mobo designs that one wouldn't even run up the fans and the other one did. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... Eeek, thanks. Just mailed Albatron support to run this past them, new mobo is the KX18DS Pro II, looks like it could be good, supposing SuSE Linux will like it lol. Matt

You're gonna like that one Matt! Drop a SATA drive into it and some good memory, then watch it fly. What cpu will you be using, standard Athlon XP or Barton core? I haven't been able to find anymore of those since setting that last one up for a customer. :o( I think you will like it though. end of line Lee
