Hey Group, I'm needing to dial up to my SuSE 7.3 machine. Can't find much in the manuals about setting up the mgetty for dial in. Has anybody set up a dial in connection to a SuSE machine lately?? This is for a standard analog modem on a serial port. Cheers Rich

Hi Rich, Have a look at mgetty, it's on the SuSE distribution under the Net group of programs. It should do what you are after. Also the url for the home page http://alpha.greenie.net/mgetty/ Regards, Graham Smith

try man getty instead or man agetty The agetty has a couple of examples. Dial in not out right?

Not dial up but a straight serial connection. Nick

Hi David, You didn't look too far on the URL I gave you in the last reply. Have another look at this page http://alpha.greenie.net/mgetty/ Under the heading "Some pointers to other related sites on the Net..." You will see a number of pointer to AutoPPP and dialin examples. These document what you have to do to set up a dialin service. Also if you install the mgetty package there is a fair bit of info supplied in the setup files located in /etc/mgetty+sendfax. Make sure you install the mgetty package. That even caused the following example line to be added to /etc/inittab. # mo:235:respawn:/usr/sbin/mgetty -s 38400 modem Uncomment the line and either change modem to ttyS0 (assuming your modem is COM1) or make sure /dev/modem is linked to ttyS0. Type init q or reboot and you should be given a login when you dial in. Works well. Greg Engel
Hey Gang, Sounds pretty straight forward......thanks for that!! um, on more question......do I need to do something to user groups or permissions so that a user has the rights to dial in ppp or is the dial up access considered to be the same as a terminal login?? I have the modem answering, but for some reason I can't log in.....it just dumps me off. Maybe I don't have the right permissions??? Cheers Rich

Will this method of dial-in also work with an external ISDN modem (Tornado
WebJet 128 to be precise)?
I wish to set up Server dial-in for admin and I have tried but without
success.
