[opensuse] tethering no DNS
opensuse 11.1 Problem: since I installed opensuse 11.1 I have problems to connect the laptop using the treo700p 1. The network manager is on. 2. The connection is established OK 3. I can not ping to google.com 4. I can ping to 74.125.95.103 (google.com address) So DNS is not seen. If I disable the network manager and use ifdown ifup then everything is OK. Any tip how can I add the verizon dns server to the networkmanger? -------------------- For connection I use the script that came with little program for the treo (usbmodem) 921600 connect '/usr/sbin/chat -s -v "" "AT&F0E0V1S0=0" OK ATD#777 CONNECT' debug updetach crtscts noipdefault novj lcp-echo-failure 0 nobsdcomp novjccomp nopcomp noaccomp noauth user USERNAME modem usepeerdns defaultroute connect-delay 5000 and I call it # pppd /dev/ttyACM0 call ppp-treo-script --------------------------------------- TIA -=terry=- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Terry, I have had DNS problems with ppp ever since 11.0 was released. 10.3 and earlier -- no problems. Your "script" is basically setting the ppp options it needs to talk with the treo. My server also functions as a "dial-in" server so I can use the phone line at the lake house to dial back in to our house in town and use the cable internet connection (basically I'm my own dial-up ISP in that situation) The principle is the same as your treo connection. I began experiencing DNS problems there, which match well the configuration that your treo uses and the problems you seem to be having. I run my own dns on the box I'm dialing into and local-area and internet name resolution works great for all computers, it just became flaky when using ppp. My ppp options are: debug kdebug 7 crtscts lock modem asyncmap 0 mru 1492 mtu 1492 nodetach lcp-echo-interval 30 lcp-echo-failure 4 lcp-max-configure 60 lcp-restart 2 idle 600 noipx file /etc/ppp/filters proxyarp login ms-dns 192.168.6.17 ms-dns 192.168.6.16 ms-wins 192.168.6.17 ms-wins 192.168.6.16 Here, you see that instead of using peerdns, I am specifying the dns server IP address (primary and backup). You might try commenting your peerdns entry and adding the dns entry directly like "ms-dns xxx.yyy.zzz.aa" and see if that help with dns. However, recall, I said I was having some problems with dns in this situation (it still works, but not trouble free) On your computer, take a look at the options in /etc/ppp/options and compare those against the options that you currently have in your treo script. That might give you an idea of where the problem is. The treo options should override any previous options in /etc/ppp/options where the parameter is *already present*, but you may be having problems with options in /etc/ppp/options that are *not present* in your treo script. Unfortunately, I haven't run across any great howtos on ppp. Let us know if the ms-dns makes any difference and also if you run across a good ppp howto. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
