[SLE] Type 83 Partition Corrupted Win95 File Manager
I have encountered an annoying and perplexing problem for which I have not, so far, found a solution. I have a two node LAN; both platforms, Igor and AbNormal, boot to either Linux (using loadlin) or Win95. Both machines, when running in Win95 have been using Explorer or PowerDesk as a file manager. In addition, I have successful Linux distributions on both platforms. I decided to install SuSE v6.4 on Igor and used YaST to change unused HD partitions to type 83 from vfat. The SuSE installation proceeded without incident. However when I rebooted the machine into Win95 I found that the file manager is not functional. The same thing happens with either Explorer or PowerDesk; the file manager opens but fails to read the directory tree into the left side of the display and then hangs. CTRL-ALT-Del will close the utility and I have found that I can access the file system on the machine via LAN from the other node, a bit of a cumbersome work around. I have tried reinstalling PowerDesk (several times) but the installation hangs at the end of the process. PowerDesk is installed, but it exhibits the same performance, or lack thereof. Any pointers towards a solution to this problem will be appreciated. I would prefer avoiding the standard MS solution to problems at all levels - reinstall the software (in this case Win95) Thanks in advance. Stephen P. Two ideas. One, you mention you changed the vfat partition to type 83 (Linux swap, right?). (1) Unless you plan to over write the vfat partition (i.e. get rid of Windows), you should leave it set to vfat or vfat 32, IIRC, 12 or 12b. (2) While this probably doesn't effect your Windows problem, do you really want 83, or ext2 (which I believe is 82). I too have PowerDesk, and have not run into such a problem, however if you've changed the partition type for the FAT 16/32 partition, that probably would do it (if it would even boot). I do believe this is a Windows problem. It thinks the partition should be there but it's not so Explorer hangs. I believe a little registry or fdisk editing is in order but since I don't use Windows much any more I don't remember what needs to be done. One useful thing to test is whether Win95 can see the drives at all, let alone the files on them. You can check that out with "My Computer", or Win Explorer, or Control Panel/System. That at least will narrow the problem down. There's also some question as to the correct partition types, at least the ones that Win likes. I'm using: extended partition f Win95 Fat16 (LBA) e Win95 Fat32 b If you try to set up partitions with Linux fdisk, you'll see some alternatives for these, and those alternatives might not work. I encountered a similar problem when I first install Linux on a win95 box. It was due to a change in the letter of the CDROM drive because of the fat partition suppressed. In fact, the letter switching didn't occur "everywhere" and the Explorer was trying to read an inexistant drive (to print the volume label in the left pane). I had to manually help Windoze : System properties / Device manager / CD-ROM / properties (button) / parameters / current drive letter assignment : type in the good one Then, probably reboot. I translated from french, the names may differ.
