[opensuse] What's blanking my screens?
I'm trying to figure out what's blanking my screens, when both power settings and screen saver are both configured not to do it. Context: My workstation and my server are each connected to their own 20" monitors, so I use my KVM switch just for the keyboard and mouse. I'm running 11.1 (fully updated) with KDE 4.2.2 on both. I frequently work with one of the computers while keeping watch on the other one to see if a download has finished, a DVD has been burned, or some other lengthy process is progressing well. For some reason, though, BOTH machines blank their screens after a few minutes. So I'm constantly clicking the KVM and jigging the mouse to get the display back, and if I'm not fast enough, I need to enter my password again. It's getting pretty tiresome. Does anyone here have an idea what might be causing the blanking? If a screen saver is configured _not_ to do that, does it fall back on some kind of default that does it anyway? Would I be better off to allow the screen saver to engage, but set it to a longer time before it does? Are you running KDE4? I had the same problem and tracked it to an annoying setting in the "Personal Settings" window. Start up the "Personal Settings" Go to Advanced > Power Management > Edit Profiles and check what the settings are for "When the system is idle for more than..." Mine was set to 4 minutes, and "Turn off screen". This setting overrides the screensaver settings, and the settings in General > Display > Power Control. Otherwise see what 'xset q' says about screensaver timeouts and DPMS. Theo -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thank you! I couldn't believe how much of that stuff was still in effect. I thought I'd disabled it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

HI list, - I'm using openSUSE11.1,- plain vanilla KDE4. HI list,

If you haven't played with the defaults much, then it's in the Favorites menu when you open the Start menu (or click the Geeko or whatever you want to call it). Otherwise, go to the Applicatiosn tab and it will be there at the bottom. The Personal Settings window is also called Configure Desktop (that's the label in the start menu). Once it launches and the window is open, it's called Personal Settings. This is a bit of a naming consistency problem... it has two or three different names depending on how you look at it. :-( Can get rather confusing.
