When I did the install (from DVD/CD, more about this later) I selected the standard kernel (not the one without ACPI), but when ACPID tries to start, a message saying the kernel does not have ACPI support is generated and ACPID is not loaded. Any ideas, will I have to recompile the kernel? Now the DVD/CD install - my laptop booted to the DVD without a problem and presented me with the install program, but when I tried to select the software, I was told the software list could not be found. I put in CD 1 and was able to finish the install with the CDs. As I'm new to the list I don't know if this is the DVD problem I saw mentioned in another message. In defense of SuSE though, I like it much better than RH9. The install was easier and all my laptop hardware was detected (internal Gbit ethernet, wireless pci, and modem), although I'm still having a little trouble getting the wireless to connect, (I get an ip address from my access point, but not much further), and haven't tried the modem yet. Also, the menus are actually editable! (disabled by default in RH9). I was using Gnome in RH, but have KDE in SuSE - I think I like it better, but not sure yet. One other thing, I actually paid for an Xserver (Xig Summit Platinum LX, $129) as it was recommended by the laptop manufacturer to get the TV out, dual screen and some of the other features of the Radeon 9000 Mobility working. What is your BIOS date? The kernel does a check, and if it is before 2000, it makes (a safe) assumption that your ACPI implementation is problematic. It may also be on the black list of buggy acpi boards. If you want to try it even though it may be problematic, use acpi=force on your command line at boot. No need to recompile.

This sure looks like it. Is it a combo drive? You can always change the installation source after the fact to use the DVD instead of the CDs, since you already worked around it. You could also see if the is an updated firmware for your drive.
