Installation CD on a Hard Drive?
Hello, I'm trying to install openSUSE on a ThinkPad without a CD-ROM drive. In order to do this I'd like to copy the contents of the installation CDs onto a USB hard drive and attempt the installation from there. I don't have any trouble putting the installation files on the hard drive, but how do I set the hard disk MBR to initiate the installation? What OS is there on right now? Take a look here: http://www.opensuse.org/Installation_without_CD If you have Linux on it, use `makeSUSEdvd -i` and add the info at the end in the /boot/grub/menu.lst or /etc/lilo.conf file. Worked for me anyway. :-) houghi -- Quote correct (NL) http://www.briachons.org/art/quote/ Zitiere richtig (DE) http://www.afaik.de/usenet/faq/zitieren Quote correctly (EN) http://www.netmeister.org/news/learn2quote.html

I have Windows XP installed on the machine, so that
method won't work for me.
I would really like to figure out how to put a distro
installation program on a USB hard disk drive and be
able to install from there. People around me use
different distros, so ultimately I would like to have
a USB drive with 3 or 4 different distro installation
progs that I can take to different computers and
select a particular distro to install.
People are booting Knoppix from USB flash drives:

I don't see why you couldn't initiate a Linux
installer from a USB hard disk.
