I am putting together a new box and I would like folk's opinion about my choices. Mobo: Asus A7V600-X Via KT600 chipset up to DDR 400 An Athlon XP, not sure what speed, so could be advised there 512 K of memory, DDR 400 unless you recommend less prdering from www.newegg.com, as they have the lowest prices Your opinions and advice solicited -- Bob Rea mailto:gapetard@stsams.org http://www.petard.us Time is the best teacher. I'd never recommend less memory. If you can afford it budget wise I'd go with all the memory the motherboard can support. More memory means the X11 system among other applications won't cause paging and swapping so readily. Of course, this depends on what you plan to use the box for.... -- :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Peter L. Hy, here in Canada going Intel or AMD is same price (as for now) I suggest you go Intel. I did. And I don't regret it. Ciao At 10:10 PM 3/13/2004, Bob Rea wrote:

I've switched from AMD to INTEL also. I'm not sure whether AMD has solved the problem or not but it used to be if your cpu fan quit (or fell off), your AMD was toast in about 10 seconds. Intel will throttle back on thermal problems. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S. Just my opinion, but a year or so ago I went through about 4 ASUS boards with problems and it took a long time and a lot of money to sort it out. Then I started looking into the situation and found a lot of suppliers that were sour on ASUS because of their quality control problems and the fact they will get a board back and ship it right out to the next sucker. I'll never buy another ASUS product again... I now buy MSI or INTEL board. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S.
