The Opera beta is out. Has anyone tried it?
Unfortunately the site has been slashdotted for the moment.

I just did. It looks pretty good. It's fast and small, 1.1M
dynamically linked or 2.5M with statically linked Qt2.2. It handles
all the sites I normally visit.
However, fonts still look crappy, which is par for the course with
linux. Aside from Opera for Windows, the real reason I still keep
Windows around is sometimes I need a break from linux's ugly
font-handling.

Try installing a TrueType fontserver xfsft is a good one and install M$ webfonts, or try getting the M$ webfonts and converting into postscript which is what Linux runs naturally which is most probably where your problem could be. ciao Rob Davies rjdart@optusnet.com.au ICQ 10432219 ' To converse is one strategy that separates us from the Apes.' -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

err sorry i was quoting someone else there. I dont have a problem with the displaying of fonts. However i do notice that font handling from screen to printer seems a bit loose in linux which is where my question was directed. ince xfstt is an x-windows font thing, what co=ordintates screen to printer or who ? dids -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
Hi all, Does Opera have any type of security? I mean I need a secured link to do my Internet banking, that's the only reason I use Netscrape now. TIA! It appears to, but bear in mind that it is a beta. Ya doesn't pay yer money and ya still takes yer chances. Performance-wise, however, it has been quite stable for me. On Sat, Oct 07, 2000 at 02:29:59PM +0200, James (Jim) Hatridge wrote:

Good, I'll try it. chances? in other words no difference to Netscrape. <G>
Performance-wise, however, it has been quite stable for me.

No, 'fraid I can't help you -- what version of SuSE, X, Qt et al. are you
using? I suggest using the statically-linked-to-Qt binary that Opera
provides, if you are not using it already. There might still be other
linux-typical library-go-round problems.
Here are some paragraphs from the Opera website that may contain
useful information:
Qt 2.2.0 has been released and has been used to make this version of
Opera for Linux. Qt 2.2.0 can be downloaded from a few different
sites. Most sites that carry the KDE project make Qt 2.2 available as
binaries or packages. Otherwise download the Qt 2.2.0 source files
from www.trolltech.com and compile it for your system. Opera requires
the -gif option to be used when configuring Qt to compile. Once it is
compiled make sure to add the $QTDIR/lib directory to the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable in order to run Opera properly.
Note: You don't need to install Qt on your system if you download an
Opera package with Qt statically linked. These packages are about
twice the size of the packages with Qt dynamically linked.
There should be no other dependencies for Opera other than to have an
X11R6.3+ implementation (and, as already mentioned, Qt 2.2.0 if you
download a package with Opera dynamically linked to Qt) installed on
the system.
I get this message: "error in loading shared libraries: libqt.so.2"
This means that you have downloaded a package which is dynamically
linked to Qt, and either your system lacks the correct Qt version, or
you haven't set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable correctly
(e.g.: export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/qt-2.2.0/lib , depending on
where your libqt.so.2 resides on your filesystem).
In other words, make sure that you have Qt 2.2.0 dynamic library
installed, and that LD_LIBRARY_PATH points to it. Alternatively, if
you download an Opera package with Qt statically linked instead, you
won't have to worry about this.
What are the system requirements to run this version of Opera for
Linux?
The Standard C++ Library is required to run Opera for Linux. This
library is a nightmare to statically link to a project. After some
thought, we've decided that instead of linking it, we'd prefer to
specify where it can be found. Most Linux distributions have it
available. We've tested on clean installations of Corel 1.0, RedHat
6.1, Mandrake 6.0, Caldera 2.2, as well as several others. We're
currently preparing to test with Debian and other versions we've
obtained. You can get this library from most Linux vendors, or you can
download and compile it from http://sourceware.cygnus.com.
What X Servers is Opera known to work with?
XFree86 3.3.5 (tested) or better, XIG or MetroX These are the
X-Windows servers we test on. We have had great success in the past
with XFree86 3.3.3.1, but we haven't tested earlier than that. We've
tested with Accelerated X 5.0.2 from XIG and also with MetroX 4.3.4.

I keep having problems with the RPM's from www.operasoft.com. I've tried both the dynamic and static linked ones. Both give this result: # rpm -ivh oper*.rpm package opera-4.0b1-1 is for a different architecture The package says it's "i386", which is what I have. Maybe my system is marked as "i586". But I've never had problems with other packages. It could be the RPM's are corrupted during transfer. Any other plausible ideas? I can compile the sources. But wanted to try the RPM's first. -- Robert Wohlfarth rjwohlfar@bigfoot.com "My theory's right. Hi :) I ignored the rpms and downloaded the dynamic [ for qtlibs 2.2 ] in .tgz This .tgz does not even need to be compiled ~ the 'opera' binary simply needs to be moved to /usr/bin Opera runs OK :) best wishes -- ____________ sent on Linux ____________ This Email is 100% Virus Free! Well it's only Xfree's problem if Xfree is causing the problem. Compare the fonts in Netscape 4.75 [mostly yuck] versus the new test release [not bad] If you're having a general font problem then something is likely setup incorrectly.
