I have SuSE 6.4 with alsa installed with KDE control conter, system sounds, enabled. The test sounds work fine. However, kscd, the simple CD player gives no sound. This worked for me in SuSE 6.3 with OSS. It appears that the front panel controls all function. Is there some configuration of some type? If not, is there another cd player that might be a better choice? Does kscd work for you? This probably isn't the answer, but check your sound mixer program and make sure the volume is turned up on the CD - it wasn't by default on mine. Also, kscd does work for me, but the random feature pauses after every song. I now use XMCD or XSADP (better) both of which come with the distribution.
