[opensuse] FTP net install howto
Hi, I wrote a howto for Suse FTP net installation with screenshots to make it more understandable. How do I submit it to Opensuse community so that others may use it? Regards, Mark -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Go to http://en.opensuse.org/Welcome_to_openSUSE.org At the top right hand corner of the page is a link to "Create an account or log in", go to that page and create an account. This will give you access to modify wiki pages on opensuse.org. Go to http://en.opensuse.org/HOWTOs Modify the "HOWTOs" page by creating a link to your howto something like "Suse FTP Net Installation with Screenshots" Click on your newly created link. This should bring you to a page where you can add your content. You might want to 'edit' other howto's to see examples of wiki formatting syntax. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Publish it to openSUSE wiki http://en.opensuse.org . You have to create a Novell account and be somewhat familiar how to edit wiki based on Mediawiki software used for Wikipedia. Here are some articles on installation: http://en.opensuse.org/Portal/OpenSUSE_Installation#I which wasn't updated recently, but it will be soon. or http://en.opensuse.org/Special:Search?search=install&go.x=0&go.y=0&go=Go result of search for 'install'. or http://en.opensuse.org/index.php?title=Special%3AAllpages&from=install&namespace=0 which is up to date, but it lists only articles starting with word 'install'. As you can see there is number of articles and it is probably better to add content to one that fits best to your topic. If you can't find article that fits the best your intentions than publish your as new one and than we can discuss how to merge existing offer. The discussions about openSUSE wiki fit the best to opensuse-wiki@opensuse.org mail list, so if you are not sure about something feel free and ask there. New contributors to openSUSE wiki are welcome. -- Regards, Rajko. Your guide is not that good I'm afraid. The biggest error in it is that you write that the mirror you used has an IP adr 192.168.0.1 :) If this adress worked for you the install program (or your router) must contain some great magic And normally putting in the IP is not needed. 99% of the time selecting http. Putting download.opensuse.org as server (think this is done auto now) and as folder distribution/10.3/repo/oss (afir this is also done auto). But putting up screenshots is a good idea. No doubt. Hi Bjorn, thanks for your input. I have to say that I really don't know how to respond to your comments other than to say that it worked. If you can tell me why it shouldn't work perhaps I can edit the howto, but these are the steps that I took. Please explain your comments further. The steps you have outlined are not wrong themselves, they are perfectly valid in case the dns doesn't work and one has to put in the ip address manually. Now the reason for your install to have worked using that is the serverip I can only guess, I suspect the suse installer defaulted to using download.opensuse.org/right-path-to-installfolder/ by itself. What I pointet out is that most of the time it's not needed as it should be put in automagically, but it's possible I remember wrong. the right ip address if the mirror you used is 64.50.236.216 192.168.0.1 is NOT a valid public ip. Read about it here http://compnetworking.about.com/od/routers/g/192_168_0_1_def.htm or google the ip if you want (or better yet, put in that address in your firefox or whatever browser you prefer) try using ping suse.mirrors.tds.net and see if you do not get a different result than you did using dig Bjørn -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Bjorn, thanks for correcting my mistake, I have edited the howto to show the text address entry for the mirror I used. That will make it easier to use anyways. I also made a howto for the http install with screenshots. Hi Bjorn, I have gone over what you have written. In the ftp installation, one may enter the text address of the server, in my example suse.mirrors.tds.net and hit enter and it will accept the address. Thanks for pointing that out to me, the wiki that I used had me find the numeric IP address and input it. I will change that on the howto. However, it doesn't provide any address automatically. I tried to do the steps for an HTTP install, and I had to enter the address and directory that you provided. Nothing came up automatically. Thanks for pointing out this information, now I know how to do an http installation. I will probably do a wiki for http installation with screenshots as well, and post it on the website. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
