It now finishes the base installation on the first try and then reboots from HD and asks for the second CD... installs all of it and then the screen goes black and the machine freezes... only difference is the noexistend X cursor... :(

Have you tried installing with the safe settings? I had just about the exact same problem, totally different hardware and that fixed it for me. I think the key is to have the disableapic line when you boot.

yes, that was it... I finally thought about that right after sending my last SOS-msg... :) I read that so often on several lists... but when it came down to it, I didn't think about that... :( thanx for your help anyway, Johannes
