Hi, Just tried the 9.2 dvd that came with the March issue of Linux Format (UK). It looks like there are not so many packages included. To name just a few that I'm missing at first glance: Scribus, Checkinstall, Sylpheed, Opera, Blackbox, Windowmaker, XFCE, nedit, tkdesk. According to the magazine, almost the full professional version is included. 'Almost', because the complete boxed set also includes some commercial or closed source software that is not suitable for free distribution. The dvd reader seems to be well recognized as an installation medium, and I can install packages from the dvd. Is the boxed set indeed much more complete than this dvd, which seems to be the same as the FTP version, or am I missing something? S.

Those magazines cost more than a linux distro p/a. Seems a 'con' On the 9.2 boxed set you get two dvd's and a lot of cds. If you want to save money buy the 9.2 upgrade - that will install also from scatch you dont get a users manual but who cares about that.

Yes and no. I enjoy reading them and getting a handle on some problems I face.

One's the source code of course :-)

Me for one :-) I find them invaluable, but I am still fairly new to Linux.

And the Cd's are not extra they are the same as the DVD. I will add "more or less" to save a long thread on the exact differences. Regards Roger

The boxed retail version of 9.2 comes with five CDs and two DVDs (one DVD is sources, though). No doubt there are some programs on the CDs that are not on the DVD, but overall my guess is that you would be getting most things on the DVD and the rest should not be too hard to install via broadband. In fact, a snap to install if you use the apt system or set one of YaST's installation sources to the SuSE ftp tree, which I would guess you can do. Considering you are getting the DVD for the mag's cover price of around a fiver, this is quite a good deal, surely. Retail was just over 40 squids for the update edition, more for the full one. IME, 9.2 is very solid, more so than 9.3 by the sound of things so far. The new issue of Linux Format, just out, has an extremely positive review of SuSE 9.3. The cover disk this time is Mandrivel 2000 and something. :) Fish
