I'm trying to get KPPP working in SuSE 9.1, on my ThinkPad. It worked fine in SuSE 9.0. When I try connecting, it will dial the modem and connect to the ISP, but then it dies with an error message: "The pppd daiemon died unexpectedly! Exit status: 2 See 'man pppd' for an explanation of the error codes or take a look at the kppp FAQ on ..." Neither man pppd nor the FAQ have any info relating to this. When I start kppp from the command line, I get the following: thinkpad:~ # kppp & [1] 4090 thinkpad:~ # kbuildsycoca running... Opener: received SetSecret Opener: received SetSecret Opener: received OpenDevice Opener: received ExecPPPDaemon In parent: pppd pid 4135 Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device Kernel supports ppp alright. pppd: unrecognized option 'passwordfd' pppd version 2.4.2 Usage: pppd [ options ], where options are: <device> Communicate over the named device <speed> Set the baud rate to <speed> <loc>:<rem> Set the local and/or remote interface IP addresses. It does not appear to be in any of the files in /etc/ppp. tnx jk

Create the file /etc/ppp/peers/kppp with the contents plugin passwordfd.so noauth

Well, that got rid of the passwordfd error, but it still doesn't work. When started from command line, I see error messages, such as "It was pppd that died" "ppp exited with return value 5" and "Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device".

"such as"? Nothing before that? 5 Pppd terminated because it was sent a SIGINT, SIGTERM or SIGHUP signal. so something kills pppd for some reason. Try adding "debug" to the peers/kppp file, try connecting, and then see if you can find anything relevant in /var/log/messages. But given that it's something outside pppd that kills it, that probably won't tell you anything. Still, it might...

Neither man pppd nor the FAQ have any info relating to this. Ummmm, from the pppd man page on SuSE 9.0: Error code 2 An error was detected in processing the options given, such as two mutually exclusive options being used.
When I start kppp from the command line, I get the following:

I have no idea where that "unrecognized option 'passwordfd'" is coming from. It does not appear to be in any of the files in /etc/ppp.
Hope you get it sorted. I can vaguely remember I had similar problems in trying to get to winmodem to work. I finally managed it after sitting down one day and going through all the possible device possibility options ie tty1, tty2, tty3 etc. With this list there is no doubt you will conquer it but do be careful of saying there is nothing in the man pages. :) -- The Little Helper ======================================================================== Hylton Conacher - Linux user # 229959 at http://counter.li.org Currently using SuSE 9.0 Professional with KDE 3.1 Licenced Windows user ========================================================================

A message from someone else mentioned adding a file, which fixed the problem. It wasn't a modem problem, as it was already working fine with minicom.
