[SLE] re: probs installing Suse 6.4
Hi, I've been trying to install Suse 6.4. Got 2 qns if anyone can help with. 1. when I type in SAX -s vga16 to configure graphics card etc it throws up some errors. I have an S3 trio 3D 4mb graphics card. I loaded the S3 package but it still throws errors. Do I have to download the latest S3 package fr. the net - if so where would i find it? I tried the website - http://www.xfree86.org/faq but just get a blank screen with only FAQ on top left corner of screen. 2. I've got win 98 on my master drive and linux on slave drive. If use the boot disk is there any way I can locate the root partition to boot linux from where it is on the slave drive. When It asked for root partition first I typed - hda3 (actual root partition) - it could'nt find. I remember someone saying hdb refers to slave drive so typed in hdb/hda3 - did'nt work, then tried hdb3. Is it possible to boot linux using boot disk if linux on a slave drive???? Hi Amit, I've got the same card and have had some interesting times trying to get it to work. The driver you want is the SVGA driver. In the past year i have installed and reinstalled my SuSE system a number of times (just hacking about, not because of problems that weren't caused by me) and everytime i went through the same hasstle of getting X to work. If you want, i'll send you a copy of my XF86Config file. You can edit it to suit your monitor and see if that helps.

Again, i have the same setup. Win98 is on hda (master) and Linux is on hdb (slave) except for a 16Mb /boot partition which is on hda. Lilo is installed on the MBR of hda and i havd had no problems boot with or without a boot disk.
When It asked for root partition first I typed - hda3 (actual root partition) - it could'nt find.

Hdb3 would be the right one if your root partition is on the 3rd partition of your second (slave) hard drive. HOwever, i don't think that it is possible to boot from there. You'll either have to continue using a boot disk or create a partition on hda (primary/master). It is easy enough if you read the HOWTOs and the FIPS docs.

If you made a boot disk during the install, there should be no problem. -- mark wilson ---------------------------- visit this site and help someone who needs you today. http://www.thehungersite.com ----------------------------- this message sent using S.u.S.E.
