AARGH,... I just got all the 4.3 repos setup :-( ianseeks, Not to worry Ian, you can rest assured that once they fix what ails you at the moment, two more regressions will appear and cripple you somewhere else. In the mean time, go do some desktop comparisons. Enlightenment (both E16 and E17) Rock! Openbox and the rest of the "box-tops" (blackbox, fluxbox, etc..) Rock! Gnome Rocks! KDE3 still Rocks! LXDE Rocks! and KDE4 Rocks (most of the time). Heck, I even like IceWM and FVWM2. The point to be made is all desktops and wm's have their strengths and weaknesses. Were it not for the pre-release of alpha grade kde4, I would have missed out on a lot of great desktops that I just wouldn't have felt the need to look at. As bad as gnome gets kicked around on this list, you would think it was horrible or something. Nothing could be further from the truth. Enlightenment - it will just blow you away with some of the smarts tucked inside. E16 is the current stable, is light on the hardware, and incredibly efficient from a usability standpoint. Openbox, with tint2 panel, and obconf and obmenu and wallmenu3 is a fully functional lightweight desktop. Icewm, fvwm2, and fluxbox all have good logic and good theme packages and are a joy to work with. But with all, what you will find is none compare to the toolset provided by kde natively. But on the plus side, all of the desktops run kde3/4 apps just fine. So, if kde4 is dead-in-the-water for you at the moment, go load e16 or e17 (gorgeous but still a work in progress) from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/Enlightenment and enjoy. For a comparison if you say E17 is about 90% complete, that would compare to KDE4 being about 85% complete to give you some idea of where e17 sits. It's fine for a daily driver. The default "winter" theme for e17 is boring, but you can find excellent e16 and e17 themes with google. The other repos you will want to check out for these desktops, add/browse: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/lxde/openSUSE_11.2/ http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/windowmanagers/openSUSE_11.2/ http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/xfce/openSUSE_11.2/ Good luck. -- David C. Thanks David, the problem is on my laptop which i'm using as a test machine at the moment so its not critical. I always keep my work machine at least one release behind. I could always just re-install 11.2 and not add the KDE4 repos and i'd be fine. regards Ian -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, to be candid, I changed the 11.0 in the repos listed to 11.2 because I thought you were running 11.2. I tried 11.2, but then went back to 11.0 due to the ati card in my laptop. (no driver for 11.2). All of the desktops mentioned work great on 11.0, so take your pick. If I were just looking at a first alternate or two, I would start with E16 and openbox. E16 is about 5meg total to download and openbox is about 1 meg. They install in seconds and are quite easy to work with. They will pick up your kde apps for their menus. With e16, don't forget to install the epplets as well (that enlightenment speak for 'Applets'). With openbox, just remember to also install 'obconf' and 'obmenu' for the config editor and menu editor. If you want a panel at the bottom of openbox or e16 for that matter, install the 'tint2' panel. Works like a chanmp. Both desktops will take about 10 minutes of stumbling around through the menus and configs to see how they work. Then you are ready to roll. Short learning curve for both. -- David C. I am running 11.2 also with ATI card. It works well as long as you don't update KDE by adding the KDE4 repo "STABLE" Thanks -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I don't even get to "select a user" to log in as before the screen goes white and displays "Couldn't find the requested component: folderview" and has a big red "X" button which you can press but it doesnt do anything. I have to do the Ctrl Atl Backspace to kill it. I'm only using the STABLE KDE4 repo for 11.2 so it should all be the same. The error implies something is missing from the repo. Does it? If something essential as that was missing I'd assume all people using that repo would see the error. If you enable autologin, you do not have to select a user and folderview sounds like you are already past kdm, so trying a new user and disabling autologin to chose it would make sense. And using only one repo does not mean that it is not possible that due to whatever half of your packages are still on KDE 4.3.1. I've never configured a user to use autologin but i guess something may have changed a config item somewhere. Any pointer as to which file i'd look in to see if auto login is enabled? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It is enabled by default and can bechanged via the YaST user module. I think it's in the advanced section of that module. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
