Openoffice woes (again, this time with OO 1.0)
I posted something similar some weeks ago. I have exactly the same problems with version 1.0. Judging from answers that I got to the previous posting it is possible - and not more difficult than installing StarOffice - to install OO under 7.3. When I try to install (either logging in to X as root, using "sux" or "sudo") and giving the command ./setup or ./setup -net is this: The message "glibc: 2.2.4" in my terminal and immediately thereafter a progress meter that's actually indicating something . Then the progress meter dissapears and I get the prompt back some seconds later. Stracing the process (strace -o /tmp/oostracefil sudo ./setup -net) gives me 128 ENOENT (No such file or directory) messages. Also during "installation" the directory /tmp/sv001.tmp is created and also deleted. This directory contains some of the files that are reported missing. I have a fairly normal 7.3 setup: kernel 2.4.18 built from mantel sources, no abnormal libraries (if you don' count some ximian-libraries that got installed with apt-get before i deleted ximian from my sources-list). Clues? Hints? Other failure-stories? -- UNIX was half a billion (500000000) seconds old on Tue Nov 5 00:53:20 1985 GMT (measuring since the time(2) epoch). -- Andy Tannenbaum

Getting ENOENTs in an strace is perfectly normal. It is the process of searching through your path you're seeing. If you look at the messages you'll see that it's the same file over and over, and at the end of each such sequence there's a success, followed by the whole process over again with another file. If you get such a sequence without a successful stat() at the end, that's when you need to worry regards Anders

Familiar scenario:...;( A clue...:) The install is different. Looking at the install script it now installs the net install by default into /usr/loca/OpenOffice.1.0 hence the net stwich is not required. Simply su to root, and do the normal install with a simple ./install Once completed then do a simple workstation install by entering /usr/local/OpenOffice1.0/program/soffice from your account. For some fun change the install script to a more familiar location like /opt/OpenOffice1.0 and the old GUI dialogue that we are all familiar pops up. However I could not get the workstation install to register properly or something as it crashes, so there must be other variables that need to be address. In short OOo lives fine on /usr/local/ (not net switch requried) on this 7.3 system. Now if someone could share how to get kprint integrated with OOo I would be one very happy puppy. The default_gueue=/opt/kde2/bin/krinpter menu from krpint FAQ does not seem to do the trick at this end with the stock cups supplied with 7.3 but perhaps its a KDE thing. Info most welcome. -- Chris H.
