They *do* - there's postfix. The lack of qmail may be due to licensing, not sure. -- -Brian Clark | PGP is spoken here: 0xE4D0C7C8 Please, DO NOT carbon copy me on list replies.
I belive Postfix is include with 7.2 Pro so can use that. The only time i got seg fault was to system overheating or bad components. Alex :) Russ Chadwick wrote:
PHP didn't seem to be sending mail so I tried typing in sendmail at the command line, here's what I get:
linux:~ # /usr/sbin/sendmail Segmentation fault linux:~ # /usr/lib/sendmail Segmentation fault
Thats the default Suse 7.2 sendmail, I removed and added the original 7.2 sendmail, and I rpm updated to the one on ftp.suse.com and have the same error. Any suggestions are appreciated

You could try postfix, although SuSE seem to have made a complete balls-up of it's installation in SuSE 7.3 from what I hear, they also cocked it up in various ways in previous distributions, which is pretty amazing since it is designed to be installable on a wide variety of systems without "fiddling". However it is simplicity itself to install from the original sources .. take a look at www.postfix.org. -- Regards Cliff
Russ, QMail doesn't allow rpm distributions for the most part. Also, part of the fun of any Linux system, to me anyways, is getting the source files and building them from scratch. Nothing makes learning easier then controlling the entire process of getting something on your system. Obviously, you understand that QMail is the far better choice for a mail server - why not take the time to install it the way it was meant to be install - from scratch! The following document is what I used as a guide for my QMail installation http://www.dulug.duke.edu/~icon/qvcs-guide/ Hope this helps you get rid of sendmail's hassles John W Higgins john@wishdev.com -----Original Message----- From: Russ Chadwick [mailto:chadwickr@hotmail.com] Sent: Monday, October 29, 2001 3:49 PM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: [SLE] Sendmail appears to be retarded PHP didn't seem to be sending mail so I tried typing in sendmail at the command line, here's what I get: linux:~ # /usr/sbin/sendmail Segmentation fault linux:~ # /usr/lib/sendmail Segmentation fault Thats the default Suse 7.2 sendmail, I removed and added the original 7.2 sendmail, and I rpm updated to the one on ftp.suse.com and have the same error. You can create RPMs or debs or whatever, but you must distribute the pristine source according to DJB's license. We'd love to distribute qmail and ezmlm but in the case of a security problem we would have trouble providing patches. -- -ckm

Exactly. Not to mention if we just wanted to install it somewhere else than where he hardcoded it to be. That would be a patch, hence we would not be able to distribute. Hence it would not make sense. -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A. Unless you want to implement a server that really have to perform, like the server running this list... Well, I find sendmail to be pretty good. I have no complaints on the
preformance it gives my department at work .. our servers handle 11
million emails a day...not to shabby :)
Sendmail is a bear..it takes a lot to learn, but once it's up it's damn
nice and very scalable. It's not a "plunk" in and change 2 files type of
solution.

Never had a problem with Sendhell :). Well when I did it was usually user error. I believe they have changed a few things over time though. Did I miss something or is this server not running qmail/ezmlm for the
lists? The original message I got said it was the ezmlm program that was
running the list. Maybe I'm mistaken about that or someone has made ezmlm
work on another email server but I don't think that is the case.

Yes, I implemented this server with qmail, but _only_ because ezmlm is such a fine sofisticated mailinglist manager. That is why I can say that it gets really annoying when you have to wait for it for 45 minutes to shut down to change the ammount of remote concurrent connections (which you BTW only can increase by handpatching the sources of qmail) etc. This server delivers more than a million mails a day, and the queue gets _really_ big when it cant process while waiting for qmail to shut down. And BTW; the Postfix author made patches to make Postfix work with ezmlm, a search in the Postfix mailarchives will reveal more details. A very nice thing since Postfix is at least as fast as qmail. AFAIK bugtraq is running ezmlm/Postfix. -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A. Increase to above 250 I should mention. But 250 is by far not enough in this servers case. It is at 1000 now, and still turnaround time can be high on high load. -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A.
