hello everyone! Is there a project like wikipedia but for man pages or info pages? If so, where is it? If not... do you think it would be a good idea for the openSUSE community to start/foster such a project? It is a matter of the right tool for the right job. Web-based collaboration can be useful in some tasks. The 'problem' with a wiki page for this type of information is that some user's opinion on how a program runs may not in fact be how it is. Program documentation that is a user's opinion is of questionable use. The documentation must come from the code developers. Of course, the documentation may be improved by user input. Requests for clarifications or examples. But that could only be ancillary to the real documentation. Maybe we could put something together for this. I think it would be great if we had something where a developer could start the page and then others could modify it but the changes would have to go though the maintainer. step 1: developer submits to open a new documentation from a central manpage project maintainer/moderator.. or what ever we would call that person step 2: developer writes a man page or opens a placeholder for one. step 3: someone goes onto the manpage and can write a section and hit submit. then the developer will be notified and all he/she would have to do is hit approve or reject. Maybe there is a project like this out there but I have not found anything of real value in my searches. If we were to do something like this with the openSUSE community as a real community effort I think it could be really helpful. Drew On Friday, January 21, 2011 02:19:15 am Roger Oberholtzer wrote:

Drew (and all), (JDD in cc: specifically) Join "The Linux Documentation Project" at http://tldp.org/ It may not be exactly what you want, but it is as close as you will find I suspect. Once there, if you want to see new features, propose them. Our own JDD is the head maintainer or some such of that project, but I don't think the project is very active currently. Hi, I'm trying to maintain a similar project; it is already running for some time but due to lack of time on my side it is updating very slowly (I plan to give it some love the next week as a part of my HackWeek efforts). If you have time, please check http://chromobear.lindevdoc.org (this site holds the most recent version of the wiki which should, in theory, soon replace an obsolete version at www.lindevdoc.org). I cannot tell for sure that it is useful for your purposes (or for any other purpose whatsoever :-) ) but if you find it at least marginally promising, I would welcome any comments or help. I'm not sure what the writer is trying to accomplish. There is a very good printed version of all the man pages from O'Reilly: "Linux in a Nutshell" by Ellen Siever, Stephen Figgins, Robert Love & Arnold Robbins. The book also includes sections on the BASH shell, several Unix editors, GRUB, gawk, and some other stuff. $50.00 and worth it! (I don't have any financial interest in O'Reilly.) I would think the O'Reilly books are available in Sweden also. --doug -- Blessed are the peacemakers...for they shall be shot at from both sides. --A. M. I (in Sweden) did not propose the thing. I commented on it. The original poster is probably not in Sweden. BTW, I cannot think of anything that is not available in Sweden. Some things, like guns, are indeed more of a challenge. But we have no complaints there... Yes, but the project seems to be needing some help or is almost dead: http://www.tldp.org/ However, I would love to see a vital project that hosts cross-distro documentation and provides links to distro specific docs. -- Bye, Stephan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
