[SLE] Keyboard problems (2)
Hello everyone (again), Here's some more keyboard problems, but not of the 'bugs' variety, more a misconfiguration. I often telnet or ssh in to a Unix server running SunOS (not sure what version). When I'm using telnet and drop back to command mode (using the escape sequence), any time I use the backspace key I get ^H instead, which I presume is the control code to escape. When I'm logged into the server the backspace key works fine. Except when I use the 'talk' program (with either ssh or telnet), in which case the backspace key again produces ^H. I also experience this behaviour when in command mode for smbmount and ftp. I take it this is a terminal configuration error? Hopefully not terminal for me ;-) (Sorry, bad joke). What do I have to change to get this working as expected? The delete key doesn't work either, by the way, it gives ^[[3~ . I would like to get this working in most of these situations if possible. Can anyone help? this actually isn't a keyboard problem, it's the telnet session settings. If you notice the escape sequence is also: ^[ I don't remember the del key, but the backspace key does output ^H instead. But if you hit ctrl-H on your keyboard, it will backspace for you this is usually on a lot of FreeBSD machines (at least where i have seen it). ryan

It could be set with stty and define the erase character. The erase character "now" active could be char(127). Different on some machines / terminals. you will have to read and try the man page ;-( man stty Juergen

Works at the prompt when I'm logged into the server, but not when using talk whilst logged into the server. Doesn't work within the ftp client, either. Nicolas Beaulieu wrote:
You can avoid the backspace's ^H problem if you are using a "telnet" session or a "rlogin" session with a xterm window by pressing the CTRL key on your keyboard and the left button of your mouse at the same time, and then selecting the "Backarrow Key" option. This will enable the backspace key for your telnet session.
Sounded promising, but didn't help :( m m wrote:
Well What I do is type the next command when it happened to me:
stty erase <backspace key>
then you will have the backspace key working.
Didn't work for me - maybe because it was already working? Juergen Braukmann wrote:

Well, although none of the above had any effect, the problem has now disappeared all by itself. I only just noticed just now (I was about to clarify my problem - you should be glad I didn't...). The only thing that has happened since I last checked if it was working is to recompile my kernel. That can't be it. Anyway, it's working now, so I'm happy. It would have been nice to know what changed though...
