I experience a problem when opening links pointing to .pdf-files with Netscape Navigator 4.78 in SuSE Linux 7.3. I get a message telling me: "Could not load the plug-in 'nppdf.so' for the MIME type 'application/pdf'. Make sure enough memory is available and that the plug-in is installed correctly." When I run Netscape Navigator as root and open these links, the plug-in works, but not when Navigator is run as a regular user. I have tried reinstalling Netscape Navigator and the plug-ins package for Netscape. The nppdf.so file looks like this: dt:~ # ls -al /usr/X11R6/lib/Acrobat4/Browsers/intellinux/nppdf.so -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 112256 Jan 27 2000 /usr/X11R6/lib/Acrobat4/Browsers/intellinux/nppdf.so Permissions for the file look OK to me. What could be wrong? Best regards, David List
I encounter the same problem, so you're not alone. But I did not investigate the problem further as I read the file with acroread from the command line after saving the document to a file. Op vrijdag 1 maart 2002 20:25, schreef David List:

I have to use the same procedure right now. I would like to be able to use the plug-in, however. I very often come across .pdf-file links that don't reveal themselves as .pdf-file links (unless you sit with one eye on the browser's status line constantly). Thank you for your answer. David, if the plugin isn't working, go to preferences, Navigator, Helper Applications, and look for the pdf extension, edit it and assign it to the acroread program instead of the plugin. The major differences is it opens the program instead of inside the browser, but at least it is automatic. Correct, that way I get acroread opened - if I use the %s option. I would, however still like to have the link opening working. Thank you for your answer. Best regards, David List
