[opensuse] A Bit OT - Need Newbie Help on MySQL
I'm not a newbie on computers in general but I am a complete newbie on MySQL. I installed MySQL as part of the xampp install kit for Linux. Everything seemed to go well and the test routines seemed to be passing. I then assigned a (MySQL) root password and everything ground to a halt. I started getting the famous "Error 2002 (HY000)) which basically means nothing can connect. I'm looking for a kind person willing to assist in locating, fixing, and explaining the bug here, even if the bug is me. I've spent quite a bit of time trying a few things I found in Appendix B of the user manual to very little effect. Bottom line? I'm thoroughly confused and need assistance. If you are interested, contact me off-list at wepin@wepin.com. Thanks for your time. You do not specify which version of openSuSE you are using. There all sorts of possibly interesting ways of shooting yourself in the foot with this bundle on openSuSE after glancing at what it installs. The SuSE versions of various packages tend to be tailored to the OS, and replacing core components like Apache, Perl, PHP and MySQL all at the same time is not something to take on lightly. This does seem to be an RPM based install, so SuSE maintenance utilities are probably not going to be aware of the changes you are applying to this system which is probably going to give a potential for a lot of grief at a future date. It may be more appropriate to check with XAMMP lists (if they exist) to find out what the issues of installing this on openSuSE are likely to be. - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. I was thinking of installing Joomla (content management system). Their instructions implied that it would be much easier to install Joomla using xampp. xampp docs also said that xampp had been tested with OpenSUSE. I anticipated about a 30 min install. Ha! I've installed joomla, and it went perfectly on a server with the standard, suse supplied lamp stack. Don, Just a guess, but after assigning the root password, can you access mysql from a konsole window (command line) using: mysql -u root -p After hitting return you will be prompted for the password. The mysql root password is not/does not have to be the linux box root password. If you can access mysql giving the root password, my guess is that you will need to create a user for xampp to access mysql with (probably xampp). It will be in the xampp docs. If this is not the case mysql has probably crashed (which would explain the 2002 error). In restarting MySQL a possible issue is that the SuSE mysql startup script is likely to have been replaced, I have in the (distant) past installed MySQL from MySQL sources on SuSE and the main problem at that time was that the standard MySQL startup script did not function correctly on SuSE, replacing it with the SuSE startup script solved that issue at that time. However, I have never come across the situation where just setting the root mysql password has caused all connectivity to mysql to fail or mysql to crash, which rather suggests to me something rather more fundamental is broken. What I would try and do is keep the relevant XAMMP bits but replace those bits which SuSE does provide from the SuSE RPMs (with things like Perl,PHP and MySQL this should not cause too many problems, some of the more exotic bits may create issues). Although the XAMMP stuff is placed under /opt one does not have any guarantee that other things may have been pranged in unpredictable ways as well. In this case you may even be inadvertently be attempting to run two instances of MySQL but without knowing what is installed where and how with this bundle one has little to work with. - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. Thanks for your time.

service mysqld start
In OpenSuSE 10.3, however, the command is:
service mysql start (Note the absence of "d")
One small point - "service" is a redhat thing, and I won't comment on
its utility, but IMHO the real handy way to start services on suse is
with the good old "rc" scripts, which follow the old school unix
convention of "rc
