I'm new to the world of linux(installed it May 1, 2000). With a few calls to installation support my base system seems to work fine. I'm running SuSE 6.4 on an AMDK6-3-400, Asus P5A, 128MB RAM, dual boot with Win98 (seperate hard drives), HP8100i CDR, SMC network card connected to the home network/cable modem, etc. Problem #1 The minor problem is that even though I can play a CD and sound comes through the speakers, any type of audio file on the computer does not produce sound. I have a Montego II card with the Aureal 8830 chip so I went to http://linux.aureal.com and downloaded the latest drivers. I installed them as directed in their README. I got error messages about "unresolved symbol" According to their README: if you get "unresolved symbol" errors during the install, rebuild your kernel with sound support (soundcore) built in (not a module). I've searched the SuSE 6.4 Linux book but can't find any information about "built in" sound support. How do I check and see if sound support is "built in" Problem #2 I've figured out how to use apache web server, I wanted to install TkApache. I went to their website and checked the prereqs. http://eunuchs.org/linux/TkApache/TkApache_content.html Seems that I have to have at least: Perl 5.004+ (no problem as I see that 6.4 installs 5.005) Perl::Tk (found this package and installed it) Data::Dumper How do I check and see if "Data::Dumper" is installed? I assume it is not since I tried to install TkApache and get no response. I know that these problems probably seem minor but I'm trying to learn. The answers are invaluable to me. If you're using the SuSE-supplied kernel, then sound support is built as modules. You'll have to recompile your kernel (see the SuSE manual about that).

Try this: perl -MData::Dumper -e 'exit' If this doesn't give you an error message, Data::Dumper is installed (AFAIK it's a standard perl module -- if you have perl installed, you have Data::Dumper as well). Thanks for the information but I read in the new manual/installation (p. 476) guide that it is no longer necessary to recompile the kernel.

Thank you for the information. Hm, but didn't the README you mentioned suggest to use built in sound support? If that's correct you have to recompile. That is what the http://linux.aureal.com README said. Then I read the FAQ in the installation manual of SuSE 6.4 and it said that since kernel 2.2.x that one no longer needs to recompile the kernel for sound support. - Carpe Diem! - Don - http://members.home.net/dongoodwin/ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

As far as I understand, you downloaded a driver from aureal.com, didn't you? The SuSE manual only refers to sound drivers that are shipped with the precompiled kernels not drivers you got from somewhere else. I called SuSE installation support and the person told me that the Turtle Beach Montego II is not supported. So, I give up on the attempt to make it work. I have five other computers in the room. I will use them for audio. - Carpe Diem! - Don - http://members.home.net/dongoodwin/ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
